Our community is in mourning and will be for weeks and months to come. A 36 year old police officer (born and raised here) was shot on Friday night while on a date. According to reports, he and his date were approached in a parking lot in a robberty attempt. It is reported that the shooter was a 17 year old high school junior - who probably had no idea that the couple he was attempting to rob included an undercover narcotics officer.
It is reported that the officer stepped in front of his female companion to shield her from the gunfire and was struck three times. He did manage to shoot the assailant one time (wounding him).
Following surgery early Saturday morning, the officer was in critical condition, but later suffered several strokes and slipped into a coma. He was removed from life support early Sunday morning at the request of his family.
He was a 3rd generation police officer - grandfather and father both served with the South Bend Police Department. He was the All-American boy - graduated from a local high school, played basketball, football, and baseball. Went to college on a full-ride baseball scholarship and came home to serve and protect the community he loved.
I'm just saddened by the whole event - so many families affected - so many hearts broken.

My heart goes out to his family. I can't imagine how hard it was to turn off life support.
Prayer's to the family.
