I never thought about this, since neither DH and I smoke...

Can you smoke on the balconies? (Of deluxe hotels, obviously)

If not, what do you do if you are a smoker. Do you have to go to the designated areas each time you want a smoke?

And there is a Smoking at Disney Resorts FAQ Sticky at the top of the Resort Board that addresses this very question/topic.

I asked in the other thread but it made me wonder, are there smoke detectors in the rooms at Disney? Seems in that posters case the issue they are experiencing would have set off a smoke detector if it was in such a volume that it seeped in their room

I believe they are the heat sensing smoke detectors that stick out of the ceiling with sprinklers. But that's just a guess.

I think that is the case since some people do smoke in their room without alarms going off and are fined for doing so.

I think smoke detectors are designed to not be sensitive to cigarette smoke. Otherwise people who smoke in their house would be constantly setting off their detectors.

True but that is typically not so heavy it billows in to a neighboring apartment, for example. I'm trying to figure out how smoke was there in such a volume the smell is heavy in another room. Would that set one off. But I guess not if they only react to heat, not smoke.

I think it usually just comes through the duct work or through small cracks, or where the wall is cut so the pipes can come through. I lived in an apartment before and my kitchen always smelled like cigarettes because my neighbor was a heavy smoker and it came up through the holes under the kitchen sink where it was cut out for the pipes.

Hotels have this panels that keep track of the smoke alarms. It can set off one room without setting off full alarm. From my experience depending how many people are smoking and if the windows are open or close it can set off the room alarm. In the panel a beep will be set off and the little light that represents the room will go from green to yellow. We usually send maintenance guys to go check it out. Let's just say cigarettes weren't the main problem...

Yep, that's how I can smell the marijuana that the person who lives directly below me smokes on a pretty regular basis (and I don't live in one of the states where it's legal), except it's through where the floor was cut for the duct work in the closet where my furnace is.

I think there are different kinds.

I once set off a smoke detector at a just-offsite hotel at Disneyland after taking a very hot shower. The steam billowed out of the bathroom and set off the detector in the bedroom area. It was midnight. No one came to help. (I won't stay there again)

The one in my condo building lives just next to the elevator. She keeps her door open often. The elevator routinely smells like a skunk was killed in it. It's awful. We rarely take the elevator now.

Tell me about it. It's usually fairly subtle when I smell it in my apartment, but sometimes it smells like a skunk died in my bathroom, which is right next to my furnace closet. And I swear, air freshener is no match for it - I'll douse my bathroom in it, and within minutes, it smells like skunk again. :crazy2:

No smoking is banned in the resorts. Have to go outside. Sorry about that

Part of the reason that I was interested in that topic is that a beloved family member smokes weed and brings it with him on trips with my family without telling us! He's so used to it that he doesn't realize the strength of the smell which haunts my clothes and hair after the least exposure. He's never stayed at POR, so he wasn't the culprit in this instance, but I know that while the rest of us are enjoying the magic, he's also scoping where he can smoke and has actually complained that the parks are designed to be weed proof i.e. there's nowhere for you to do anything illicit. (To me, that is an indication of excellent design.) He's actually gone so far as to rent a boat in order to smoke in the middle of the lagoon! My DH and I are sensitive to smoke of any kind and suffer from asthma. I would have had the same reaction whether the smell was from marijuana or cigarettes. In fact, we moved out of a suite at the Fairmont in Washington once because it smelled of cigarette smoke and had been masked in a sickly sweet air freshener. The Fairmont moved us to the Marriott, a non-smoking property, at their own expense. We thought that was a fair resolution.

I know a Disney has included vaping, e-cigs, with regular cigarettes. But I wonder if folks are more inclined to break the rules and use them indoors? And today I learned that some users have started to put THC oil in the vaping liquid. Made me wonder if that has a similar odor to smoking pot. Or are there other vaping liquids that smell like pot? I guess there are lots of different flavors and I assume odors with them

Just one funny thing. My DS has been around his grandpa (and Eau de Ganja) his whole life. He recently shared that when he was little, he thought what he was smelling was just "old man smell."

I don't know about that specific smell but I have heard many of the flavors that people smoke can have an obnoxious odor. Imagine clouds of fruity perfume wafting toward you. I'd hope anyone vaping something with THC oil would be a bit more subtle but you can't expect people to be sensible.
