S/O Coronavirus School Closing considered in your area?

My DS is in 4th Grade a special needs class for Autism. They haven’t gone into detail of what our district will be doing yet. We were told to expect more information this weekend. Good to hear your district will handle food for those kids that need it. :thumbsup2

Same county, too! While DS27 is long past school days, my co-workers have school age children. It’s been a day by day sharing of what’s closing, etc. One co-workers children said his children go 1/2 day Monday & Tuesday (Camden County).and then he has no idea. From what I am hearing, most schools will be closing , not “if” but “when”. Another co-worker has a HS senior and his senior trip is now canceled as it was to WDW, during time the park has closed.
I'm also in Burlco. Our district closed until April 20, however I work for a district in Camden county and they're only closed until March 27th. Im hoping they extend the closure in Camden county.

School I work out in NJ got the word yesterday we will be closed at least 2 weeks

my dd and did attend college n Florida. They started spring break but found out Thursday they will be going to all online classes for at least the 2 weeks after that, and maybe until end of the year.

All the local school systems have closed. Our nephew is a senior and their basketball team had just won sections after having a great season, to say they are all bummed would be an understatement.

I ran and collected my books on hold this morning before our library closed. I have a feeling they won’t be opening Monday.
I don't blame you at all. I had my husband do the same yesterday for a movie I had on hold feeling like the other library system could close at any time. That feeling of knowing you have something just waiting for you and you can't get it for a long while can be so strong!

Maine has 2 potentially confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the Waterville area. Here in the Bangor area, the public schools are closing for at least 2 weeks. It started this morning when the local private high school closed for 6 weeks. Within hours, Bangor public schools closed for 2 weeks. Now, it's like the domino effect- 5 other school districts have closed already. We shall see how many end up closing... but it's gonna be a lot. Maine is taking social distancing seriously, I think!

I teach in Camden County as well and we received our email today that we will switch to remote learning from Tuesday to April 1st and they will reassess the situation then for the possibility of extending the time period.

Here in the U.K. it was strongly expected that the government would announce nationwide school closures after their emergency Cobra meeting on Thursday. Surprisingly they are insisting that they stay open as the evidence isn’t there to suggest that it would do much to lessen the spread. Their tactic seems to be to have half the nation catch the virus to build up herd immunity. :scared:

Almost all of the districts in my area have closed for at least the next week. Several are on Spring Break but the district I am in had ours this past week. They have prepared 43 page work packets for the elementary kids and at the middle & high school levels each teacher has give a digital assignment a week. They just announced a couple of hours ago that we have the first community spread patient. If we get another one the schools could be closed for 6-8 weeks which would take them right up to the last week of the school year. As of now the assignments that are being given aren't going to be turned in or graded so in my opinion not many will be completed. They should at least have them turn something in for accountability although I know that some kids won't have the home support to complete them. I already told my sister that I will watch her 10 & 12 year olds and help them with their assignments so she can get her work done because as of Monday she will be working from home. The kids will be in for a surprise because they are used to me taking them to movies, bowling etc to keep them occupied but that won't be happening until things settle down.

The local public school system will be handing out 'learning packets' at the free lunch program that will run at the schools three days a week. Kids will not be required to do them at all, closed for three weeks per the Governor of Michigan and then still having Spring Break the week after that. Four weeks off with no learning. I mean, I understand why some of the kids are very low income and don't have internet access at home.

The school system my wife teachers for, and daughter goes to is having homework due two days a week during the time off. My daughter did the home work for the week yesterday. So she is getting extra work per my wife.

Still no decision made to close DGD's school although it does sound like they have a workable game plan for when it happens.
It dawned on me that I'll need to provide her with lunch daily. Decided henceforth while bulk cooking I'll put away 16 single portions of food for her. That should cover most of a month's worth of mid day meals and leave creative license for almost one school week. Won't be surprised if a schoolmate or two drops by during the downtime.

So not necessarily school related but it seemed relevant given all this discussion with the schools closing---

In my area we have multiple library systems. I technically have access to 4 different library systems due to reciprocity agreements.

In my county we have two. One library system has 2 locations the other library system (considered really the main one) has many branches throughout.

Today the library system with 2 locations announced that from today until Sunday they will be a "quick browsing and quick reference location to promote social distancing. Staff resources will be dedicated to helping transform library operations to a quick browsing, circulation model." However, of upmost importance is that the two library locations will be closed from March 16th until it's deemed appropriate to reopen....

Both library systems in my county have already cancelled meeting rooms, programs, book sale events, etc.

During breaks many families go to the library to engage in programs and get books for their children and with all these school closings going on (not completely in my area yet) the library, a place near and dear to my heart, isn't something I had considered yet :( While you may not think about going to library programs because it's close contact you may have thought about getting library books to occupy one's time.
This is such a bummer! I volunteer at my local library and I love it- it's my happy place. This Tuesday it was business as usual, albeit a little quieter. The volunteer coordinator was complaining that all outreach programs should be cancelled. We had a local elementary school come in for a field trip so they could see the library and learn how to check out books.

Sure enough, the next day I get an email stating all outreach programs suspended until the end of the month. I feel for the parents of young children out there. They have such a range of activities to take part in-they can even read to a dog! We also have a "Library of Things" where you can borrow croquet sets, telescope, edger, go pro, etc.

Then I got an email on Thursday saying no volunteering until further notice, essential staff only. I'm hoping they won't close the library down but I will understand if they need to- I only had one book on hold that I picked up on Tuesday and I'm already halfway through it, what will I read

Find out if your library is a member of the free lending service located at Amazon; think it's called Overdrive.
Just went to NYPL.org and found out my library is closed for a week or so.

Oh I forgot. DGD's weekend and afterschool enrichment programs were closed this week. Her archery class is closed temporarily and the study program for specialized high school shutdown cancelled for this weekend so far. Hope they both re-open soon but particularly the test enrichment program. Be nice if more education money could be dedicated to college instead of high school.

I know it is really a bummer :( I just hadn't considered it ya know with all these other things and thinking about all the kids that would be on Spring Break and then thinking about the schools closing.

Volunteers were asked several days ago to not come in and meeting spaces were closed up, programs were canceled (all I'm sure to limit the number of people and encourage social distancing) and then within several days they closed up for both the library systems in my county.

I totally hear you on the programs. They seem to be heavily used here (which is part of the problem with social distancing of course). Oh I love hearing they read to dogs! How wonderful.

Yes we have something of that sort too for borrowing--tools, and whatnot but also baking pans who knew lol. I love that you can go to these places and get random stuff like that.

I agree with @NYCgrrl on your e-library capabilities those more than likely wouldn't be impacted--course that's reading on an electronic device if you have one (I know for mine you can also read on the computer that's just not the same though) and as much as I love my kindle e-reader and use the heck out of the Kindle Unlimited program a physical book is special. I technically have 3 books at home but it won't take me long to read them..

Well, my husband got me a Nook years ago but I just don't use it- I love the feel of the book in my hands. I have read a few books on my phone using Overdrive, had totally forgotten about it. We do have a whole collection of books(our mini library) in my husband's office, most of them are his hardback science fiction books though- will only read those if I'm desperate!

Thank You! I had totally forgotten about this- I have used it before on my phone but it's been a while. I just prefer a physical book. Desperate times call for desperate measures though :D I need to keep up with my annual reading challenge.

Minnesota just closed state wide, mandatory effective this Wednesday through 3/27 (it will get likely get extended). Individual districts can close sooner.

I prefer the physical presence of books too but opt in to Overdrive and similar when weight becomes important like going on vacations. Also no more concerns about books being left on the picnic table for the morning dew when we go camping- not that that would ever happen.....;). You can download to a laptop too which has bigger page size and font than a phone.

libraries here closed yesterday-for a minimum of 1 month.
k-12 schools statewide close tuesday-at minimum until april 24th (no word on how districts will handle-if work given out/extending school year???)
the colleges are all trying to faciliate spring quarter being on-line but some programs can't support that so many classes may have to be cancelled/students delayed in completion.

spoke to family/friends in other states to see what is happening with the school closures and how things are being handled-

one district in order to handle getting meals to kids who rely on them is preparing them and delivering at designated times to the bus stops where the kids eligible to them would normally catch the bus.

another district is having intense discussions about school work at the high school level b/c they are concerned that many of their students are the eldest 'kids' in their households and will likely be called upon to provide childcare for their younger siblings during the normal school hours/after school activity times. there are concerns about putting to much pressure on these students esp. if their younger siblings will have assignments that will rely upon the older sibs for help with.

Schools here are closed. I have an infant, and her daycare is not closed (as of now). They said they won't essentially unless instructed to by authorities.

My husband and I are working from home and will not be sending her to daycare until we have to physically go back to work. I am trying to figure out if I should pull her or not... with a potential recession looming I don't think we should be throwing away 1k+ month on daycare we're not using - but I also don't want to be stuck without childcare in case this all works out. Sucks. Really wish they'd just close or offer options for parents (maybe pay so much to hold spot).
