A high scale store told me that it is not fashionable to wear black hose for formal wear anymore. What do you think? I have a black long dress and a semi formal dress that I need to buy nylons for. Would you buy tan or black. Would you wear flip flops? Help. I am not that up to date for fashion.

I'm far from a fashion expert, but I wouldn't wear flip flops to dinner. I'd wear a pair of sandals, though.
For the hose, I live in NYC and see plenty of women in upscale restaurants with black hose, but really not in summer. I would wear the tan hose with the dress, just because the black looks so covered up, and for a summer look, it may be too much.

Now, if you prefer the black hose, go for it. You'll look beautiful either way. :Pinkbounc

i LOVE flip flops, and i'd wear them...but not together w/my formal/semi formal dress!! :flower:

More of a "glamor fashion don't" myself unless I leave the store with a completd outfit, including accessories and direction regarding shoes.

I'm in the south, and in warmer clients, especially the Caribbean, I think the hosery style is more towards "natural" skin tones, very sheer. Many women I see on cruises will not be wearing hose with formalwear, and will opt for a nice open-toed shoe instead. Nivea has a great toned lotion with a shimmering finish in it that gives suntanned legs a healthy glow.

No flip-flops w/ hose...and no black hose unless someone died and you're wearing a black suit, hat, and veil. And yes, a pedicure is a MUST-DO !!! I get a french in the summer, looks great w/ tanned legs and feet, low maintainance, and goes w/ everything.

: My two cents...

I think black hose look nice, but tanned legs look WAY better...It is so hot anyway, the thought of wearing hosiery freaks me out.. :scared1:

THere are so many nice forms of flip flops, nice flattering ones, not the 1.99 kind for dinner...IMHO

Where what YOU feel comfortable in, and happy cruising..

I agree with some of the other ladies...Just wear a nice pair of open toed dress shoes or sandals. I really don't think hose will be necessary at all, especially with a long dress. I saw TONS of ladies with no hose on our last cruise, actually, I think I saw more without than with!

Get a dressy pair of open-toed shoes, no hose and a nice pedicure. You can even get a design just on your big toes with rhinstones. If it's in the budget, go for a parafin wax too.

Thanks everyone!

Forgot to tell you that I am a fair skinned red head so the natural tan won't be there.

Oh yeah, big negatory on the black hose. I think the last time I wore black hose was to my graduation party in 1991 :teeth: I do consider it a personal mission of mine to spread the word against hose with strappy/sandal shoes. But my mother still refuses to listen to me ;) In fact, I could probably find a picture of her in black hose AND open toed shoes. :earboy2:

I do fondly remember how slimming black hose were for chubby legs, but alas, they've gone the way of scrunchies (give it time, it'll come back...my little 19 year old nephew's girl friends are wearing things I spent 10 years living down having worn in the 70's-80's. Should have saved all my clothes  )

i personally think you can wear flip flops with nice formal clothings. it brings out your personality. like i care enough to get dressed up but im still a fun loving gal! its a cruise not dinner at the white house

is spray on hose, which basically gives your legs a little color like hose, but wouldn't be hot at all

I vote for the no black hose as well

But I override that with "do whatever makes you happy and comfortable"

You know what? No matter what decision I make, your post was right on the money. Thanks everyone for all your insight into the fashion world. Is your vote for the knee length semi formal dress......no nylons whether it be black or tan??

13 DCL cruises and I have never worn hose with any assortment of formal wear that I brought...too dang hot!!!

branv :rotfl2: :rotfl: good one!!!!! :rotfl:

I can honestly tell you that I never once noticed if other women were wearing hose to dinner. I didn't realize people were looking to see if I had hose on! :confused3

I wore a nice pair of black flops to dinner every night except for semi/formal nights. Didn't bring hose with me. :rolleyes1

:rotfl2: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: Oh how I agree with that statement!! Hopelea, I guess you are right. I never looked at other women to see what they are wearing and they probably don't look at me. Good point.
