Russia's 9/11

Although it was a terrible act of terrorism, there's no way I would compare the lost of 90 lives to the thousands of lives we lost on 9/11.

I don't think we should play the, "our loss is bigger than your loss," game. Who knows what the hijackers plans were? Who knows if they were planning to detonate in a populated area?

Terrorism is terrorism regardless of the scope. The attacks of September 11th, 2001 differ from these only in the magnitude of carnage. To the friends and families of those 90 people, it is quite similar.

:( :(

The scary thing is that when the story first broke, everyone was hoping it was just an accident. :( :(

So sad, I'm sorry for this loss. I don't think the number of people lost is really relevant. It's simply a terrible act.

I have a friend who is Russian. Russia has been dealing with terrorism on their soil for some time (bombing of apartment buildings etc). It's not the first event there.

I can see how it could be called "Russia's 9/11" in terms of the method used - coordinating the destruction of planes within minutes of each other - and the innocent lives lost.

They thought the same thing in NYC on the morning of September 11, 2001.

:( :sad2: Has anyone officially claimed responsibility?

From MSNBC:

"Islamic militant group claims responsibility
A Web site connected to Islamic militants published a statement on Friday — signed the “Islambouli Brigades” — claiming responsibility for the crashes. The statement’s authenticity could not immediately be confirmed."

Any reason mentioned for why Russia? All I have seen is that that Islamic Group claimed responsibility. Could it be the Chechin Election coming up??

Chechnya wants to be independant from Russia. My Russian friend says Russia does not want Chechnya to be independant because they want to control the oil/pipeline there. Chechnya has a large Muslim population and warlords. Islamic militants have been attracted to their cause. Here's some background if anyone is interested, although I don't know how "fair and balanced" it is:

I am worried about our upcoming election.

I really don't care who did it. What I want to know is how they managed to pull this off in this age of heightened security.
I wonder what security is like at the Moscow airport?

Makes me sick. So sad for the families; I don't care if it was 9 or 9,000 lives lost; it was due to terrorism, which is evil, pure and simple.
