Running Renaissance: WDW Marathon 2025

WDW Marathon Recap pt6
We've made it to race day folks! 🥳🥳🥳

For the last several years, I have been a first bus person. However, since the buses were starting at 2am this year, I decided waking up in the 1 o clock hour was nuts and I was no longer a first bus person. My body hates me though and woke up just after 1:30 for a bathroom visit. Fortunately, I was able to quickly get back to sleep for another hour before my alarm.

Since everything was set out the night before, it was a swift scramble to get ready and out the door. My goal was to leave by 3:15 so that I had plenty of time to get into my corral before it closed at 4:15. We were slightly ahead of schedule and left a few minutes before 3. The walk through the resort had several other runners and supporters. There were several buses waiting at the lobby when we arrived and it was a quick departure.

We sat at the front of the bus and I ate my traditional pre race breakfast, pop tarts 😋. I don't often eat pop tarts in my regular life but they continue to be a race day staple. Since we were at the front, I was able to keep an eye on where we were going. I'm not super familiar so not the best navigator, but I am pretty good at reading signs 🙃. Our bus driver was about to take an exit but he decided to follow the bus in front of him. I immediately realized we missed our exit and became on high alert. Luckily, our driver also realized the mistake and was able to promptly course correct and get us back on track. Whew, that was a close one.

There was a line to get through security, a first for me, but it moved efficiently. We made a stop at the entrance for the obligatory SSE pre race photo and then my mom boarded the monorail to find a spot on Main Street.

I continued walking and headed toward the light pole but it was 3:45 and no one was around. I made one last stop at the potty and then found a spot along the railing in my corral.

IMG_7072.jpeg

Folks started to get antsy and stand up so I joined the crowd. At this point, I really wanted to pee again but I was too nervous that they wouldn't let me back in. In hindsight, I should have snuck out for one more wee but it wasn't an emergency.

As a proud member of not so tall, I could not see any of the pre race shenanigans. This was mildly annoying to be standing there staring at the back of folks heads for 20 minutes. I wish there were screens to the back or left side of the stage.

Due to my late arrival, I was back further in my corral than usual. This wasn't a big deal but I was surprised to be in the 3rd wave. Last year I was in the 2nd wave and would have told you that was the back 😆. Turns out it was just the back when I arrived, but not the actual back.

As the race start neared, I began shedding my layers. First the Santa pants, then the jacket and the ear buff. Last but not least, the mylar. I tried to find a little wiggle room for some lunges to wake up my glutes and soon enough it was my turn. 🏃‍♀️

Before we get to the running, I want to quickly mention my goals:
  1. Enjoy myself, especially the second half
  2. Finish sub 4
  3. New PR (<3:57:53)
In order for #1 to be achieved, I needed to stop myself from doing anything dumb like going out too fast. The race equivalency calculators ranged in estimates from 3:41-3:52. I decided that any pace between 8:45-9 would be acceptable but mostly focused on not going faster than 8:45.

That first mile was very crowded. Much more so than I remember in years past. In the moment I assumed this was from being in the 3rd wave but now I wonder if there were other contributing factors like the size of the wave or course design. I did my best to just hold steady and not weave too much. After all, this is a marathon. No reason to tack on a bunch of extra mileage. Ariel was out on the course in her dress but she had quite a line (i.e. more than 5 people) so I kept going. First mile was done in 9:10 but that was alright with me. I knew the congestion would clear up eventually and I could run my pace.

Next up I remember spotting Gaston and did consider a photo but I wasn't ready for a stop and he also had more than 5 folks in line. Just before mile 2 was Belle & Beast. I've stopped for photos with them before so I didn't even consider stopping. Mile 2 was done in 8:56 and the pathways were finally starting to open up a bit.

We made our way into World Showcase and I did my best to soak it all in. Two weeks later, and I barely remember it 🤣.

But anyway... The internet tells me Abu was out but his costume kind of gives me the creeps so I kept moving. Next up, I remember seeing Rafiki and I would have stopped for him but he didn't have a photographer yet. I knew we'd pass by later in the race so I made a mental note to check at the end. My hands were starting to sweat by this point so it was time to ditch the gloves. It was a balmy 40 degrees after all 😊. Mile 3 was 8:49 and I was finding my groove.

Immediately after Epcot, we were cheered on by spectators near the bus stop. This is one of my favorite places to cheer because it's fairly uncrowded and easy to get to from the start. Launchpad McQuack was also in this area but I have a photo with him already as well.

Before mile 4, I passed another character stop but no characters were out yet. I'm pretty sure Goofy & Powerline Max were out later. A bit of a bummer because I likely would have stopped for them. I do have their photo from a few years ago, but I'm a sucker for Goofy (and most of Mickey's friends TBH). Mile 4 clocked in at 8:40. I did some running math and realized I had about 2.5 minutes difference from the gun time.

The next few miles were boring highway miles with not much to note. Meg & Herc were out followed by an empty spot, presumably for Pain & Panic. Then I heard the Rescue Rangers song and knew that I had to stop for my pals Chip & Dale. Their line was longer than I prefer but I couldn't skip it. It ended up taking over a minute, but oh well, I wasn't worried. I just get impatient.

IMG_3205.jpeg

Somewhere in these miles was a muppets mile marker and I got filled with false hopes that there would be muppets on course. I doubt they still have the costumes, but there used to be mega muppet meet n greets, so it's not totally unreasonable.

I really don't remember much else. 🙈 It was dark and there was occasionally a cool breeze but I was never uncomfortable. Mostly I was thinking about how I really hoped the EWP was out and that I was going to stop to pee once I got inside the MK and found a plumbed & lighted bathroom. Miles 5-8 were 8:29 (whoops!), 10:00 (c&d), 8:52, & 8:50.

I was so very excited when I could finally see the EWP. I love that thing! It was conveniently right next to a water stop so I pulled over into the grass for a quick drink & photo before making my way into the MK. This was one of the biggest highlights of the race for me.

I love your pic with WP. I wish I would have done that I am terrible at taking pics during runs.
Thanks! I wish I would have taken a few more but my iPhone is pretty terrible at night photos and I also get antsy to get moving again. I love having photos after the fact. I hate stopping for them, even when I'm not running. 😆

Speaking of not stopping for photos, if I have one regret for the trip, it's that I didn't take a picture of the half marathon pennant decoration on the wall on the way to the runDisney merch: "Every duck for himself!"

We were quoting that the rest of the trip anytime someone acted selfishly or carelessly 🤣

I guess it's probably a reference to this but still a very weird message to have for an event that typically focuses on camaraderie.

WDW Marathon Recap pt8
The other big highlight of the race was running through the Magic Kingdom. 🤩 I always try to take in as much as I can in this stretch but there's always so much going on that I inevitably miss something. The crowds were buzzing with energy and I did my best to give it back to them. I don't have the words to describe how sensational it is to run down Main Street in front of hundreds of adoring fans with the castle all lit up straight ahead. 🥰✨

My mom had found a place near Casey's so I made sure to give her a big smile and wave before we turned left into Adventureland. According to her, Mickey & Minnie were also out cheering. I totally missed this but not because I wasn't paying attention! I have video evidence that they were not there when I ran past ☹️. This is a photo from about an hour before my arrival.

1738447095930.jpeg

I debated stopping for a castle selfie on the Adventureland bridge, but the angle didn't seem that good. At this point, I knew I wasn't making it another 16 miles without a pee so I ducked into the bathroom. Quickly after that were what I presume to be members of the Adventurers Club but I must admit that they are a smidge before my time so I would never recognize them. In fact, the only reason I know of them is because they're usually out on the marathon course somewhere. Regardless, I enjoyed the brief distraction that their antics provided.

From Adventureland we headed into Frontierland where I'm always surprised at how dark it is. I was also surprised that there were no characters at all in this section. For shame. I definitely would have stopped for Tiana in front of her new ride.

As we did our little jaunt through old Fantasyland, I started jockeying for position for an unobstructed castle photo. I found myself in a nice sized gap and tried to hold it. I'm pretty sure the carousel was running but no riders. I definitely remember a ride in motion, but I wouldn't promise it was the carousel.

Anyway, we approached the castle and the view was nothing short of magical. I could see through the castle down Main Street at all the spectacle. Probably another spot that I should have taken a photo but I couldn't be bothered to fish out my phone and stop so the camera could focus. My photo gap had tightened up but I still had a slot and got a pretty good castle shot.

IMG_3210.jpeg

I had a mission to get a photo in each park, so I stopped on the Fantasyland bridge for a quick selfie just in case the on course photogs failed me.

IMG_7075.jpeg

Just after the bridge, Bruno was out cheering but no one was stopping for photos, myself included. I may haved stopped for Mirabel but she must have been on break. We turned by the teacups for a grand tour of new Fantasyland. Pooh was in this section but he had a line and I already have a photo with him.

Back in 2018 at my first WDW marathon, I stopped for a photo with Sebastian and it's one of my favorite race photos. When I saw that he was out and didn't have a line, I knew I had to stop. I did my best crab pose but I don't think he was too impressed 😆

6E37905A-3F81-493C-A924-C63FD204CA49.jpeg

The course then went past Dumbo & Barnstormer to Tron. For some reason, I thought we were going to run across the Tomorrowland bridge and back down Main Street. I was very confused when we didn't but, in hindsight, that would have been complete chaos to have runners in both directions. Some of Stitch's friends were in Tomorrowland so I waved to them as I exited backstage.

As we made our way to the Contemporary, my legs started to hurt. It wasn't a sharp pain or anything dramatic, but just enough to remind me they were there and they were getting tired. This made me incredibly nervous. I wasn't even halfway! I was also pretty convinced that due to all the fuss my hamstring had been making all season there was no way I was going to run a marathon without some pain. I did my best to just settle in and take whatever the rest of the race may be in stride.

Miles 9, 10 & 11 were 9:15, 8:47 & 9:04. A bit erratic, but I was pretty happy with them considering all the stops.

The next couple of miles were.... something? There were some fans at the TTC but otherwise not a whole lot going on besides dark roads and parking lots. There were a few characters (Jessie & Woody, Mulan & Li Shang, Aladdin & Jasmine) but none of them piqued my interest. My paces were 8:51 & 8:46 with a half split of 1:59:14. My goal felt within reach. I had a couple of longer stops to pee and for Chip & Dale so as long as I didn't blow up that 3:57 was doable.

As I approached Animal Kingdom it was still dark and a bit foggy. The first character in this section was Chewbacca, but there was a line and I've never been that into Star Wars. Darth Vader was also nearby and had a line. At that point, I realized this was more than a couple of characters and it was a full on battle with fog, lasers & sounds. I imagined it was probably similar to the scene they did for the Star Wars race several years ago. I was so happy @nancipants would get to experience this. I finally saw a character without a line, so decided that I would stop. At first glance I thought it was the Mandalorian. Of course it wasn't, he obviously would have had a line. Instead it was what I only knew as "some sort of weird storm trooper." Sorry fans 🫣. Rey was also out and without a line, but I had already made my star wars stop so I kept moving. These miles all clicked by pretty much at goal pace: 8:44, 8:45 & 8:48.

Your castle pic is so good! And omg you’re so sweet to have thought of me. 🥰
Thanks! That section was very obviously not for me and I did get mildly annoyed breathing in the fake fog, but I appreciated that some folks would love it and was happy they were doing something in that otherwise boring stretch.

WDW Marathon Recap pt9
I was happy to be approaching AK and waved at Dug & Russel as I made my approach. The sun was just starting to rise and the animals were not out yet which made me a little sad.

On my way through the park I stopped for a quick photo with the tree of life and noted that there was already a runner waiting for Expedition Everest at 7:10am. I wasn't planning to ride but all I could think is that they really should have slowed down in the first 18 miles so they weren't just standing there. I said my goodbyes to dinoland as I made my exit.

IMG_7077.jpeg

We ran past Tarzan & Jane and I heard some runners asking who they were. I was a bit surprised by this, but I didn't know half the star wars characters 😆. On my way into AK one of the DJs was telling the runners exiting that Donald & Daisy were just around the corner. Mickey & friends are my favorite characters to meet so I was looking forward to this. Much to my disappointment, when I got there it was only Donald. They were having camera issues so the stop took longer than I anticipated but I did eventually get my somewhat blurry photo.

Miles 17-20 were 8:44, 9:04, 8:41 & 8:52. I had been running for 3 hours and was now on the dreaded Western Way. Luckily for me, the sun was still low enough that the trees were blocking it. The road is elevated here and there's no shoulder so I'm not really sure what could be done for entertainment, but I would have liked something.

At this point, I was doing a lot of runner math at every mile marker. The marathon is often described as a 10K with a 20 mile warm up. It was time to get down to business. 👩‍💼I felt confident that I could hold a 9 minute pace for 10K and I knew that I had 2.5 minutes less than the clock. I basically just factored that 2.5 minutes to cover the .2 miles. I was on pace for a new PR! I just needed to keep going.

The next several characters had no appeal to me: Lilo & Stitch, Lotso, Frozone. I did my lap around Blizzard Beach and was surprised there were no characters there. If they're going to make us circle a parking lot, they could at least make it interesting. Fun fact, my mom had my live track link and was worried I was either injured or lost because the route was so weird 😅

The DJ was playing Tootsie Roll and I did my best to dance along. I'm sure I looked absolutely bananas but the DJ was happy to get some participation. Bolt was cheering for runners right outside of BB. My paces for these 3 miles was 8:41, 8:53 & 8:41.

Less than 5K to go and I still felt pretty good. I was noticably passing more folks. My other cousin was staying at the Swan and I told her that I should be there around 8:15. When I wasn't doing runners math about my finishing time, I was trying to estimate if I was going to meet that 8:15 promise.

I saw Scrooge on my way into HS but at this point I was on a mission. Guests were just starting to make their way into the park and forming a line for ToT & RnR. I waved for a camera on my way up Sunset Boulevard only to realize they were doing posed photos only. Oh well. I was too focused to stop for even a selfie at this point. My pace picked up a bit as I exited the park and passed the spectators between HS & the skyliner.

IMG_3207.jpeg

With every step toward the boardwalk, I wondered if my cousin would be there. She's habitually tardy and I wasn't really sure how early she wanted to wake up. I was absolutely overjoyed when I saw her just prior to the turn onto the boardwalk. The smile on my face is beaming.

IMG_8961.jpeg

Earlier in the race when I ran past Jack, I told myself that I would stop for Oogie Boogie. Lo and behold, there he was. I didn't really feel like stopping anymore though and he was heading in for a break so it was a non decision.

Daisy was also out and I was sad to skip her, but I just wanted to finish. This late into the race and I worried about getting started again if I stopped. Instead of Rafiki, Timon was also near mile 25. Supposedly Olaf was also out but I really don't remember him. What I do remember is finally hearing the choir signaling that the finish was near. They were singing Party in the USA which is an odd choice but I loved it. It's one of my partner's favorite songs so it immediately brought him to mind.

They switched to a Queen song as I ran past but I have zero idea what song it was. I knew it in the moment but all my brain can remember now is Queen. I'm sure it was something like We are the Champions but at this point I like to pretend it was something else like Fat Bottomed Girls or Bicycle Race.

Soon enough, the finish line was crossed and I had done it. My second sub 4 and a new PR!! 3:54:41!

IMG_3203.jpeg

I was still nervous to stop and jogged through most of the finishing chute with tears of joy streaming down my face. I collected my mylar blanket, snacks, medal and those coveted Mickey ears.

All I really wanted was a photo with the big cheese himself so I headed straight to his photo op and texted my family to meet me there. After a quick photo, we were on our way to get cleaned up and enjoy the rest of the day.

WDW Marathon Recap pt10
As mentioned, I didn't stay at the finish line long. We had a fun day with the whole family planned at MK. At one point, I thought about taking the monorail straight to MK for rope drop. I would have gone to shower later, I just wanted to do it since it was seemingly plausible. My partner quickly talked me out if that idea 😅

I'm going to skip a lot of the specifics so I can wrap this thing up (and also it's been 3 weeks so I couldn't be specific if I wanted). First thing we did though was Tiana's Bayou Adventure where I experienced my second ride evacuation if the trip 😮

IMG_7082.jpeg

I really don't remember what else. I know we rode Buzz where my laser wasn't working very well so I ended up just sitting back and enjoying the ride. We also rode the Liberty Bell since it might be our last opportunity. That's where we noticed that Tiana was drained and it was unlikely we would be able to ride it later in the day ☹️

IMG_7168.jpeg

IMG_7173.jpeg

I also found time for a couple of earhat photos, but mostly because the castle was totally empty as we were trying to sneak past the parade 😅

IMG_7095.jpeg

IMG_7097.jpeg

I had celebration dinner at Hoop Dee Doo where we sat so close that I was practically part of the show.

IMG_7106.jpeg
The show and the food were good, but I wouldn't do a dinner like this on race day again. There were several times during the show where I wanted to get up and move around but couldn't. I'm not really a good sitter on a usual day, but the post marathon muscles definitely wanted more movement than I gave them.

My mom had requested breakfast with Mickey so we gave Ohana a try. This was another scheduling snafu because I really wasn't thrilled with setting my alarm on Monday. Live and learn!

Breakfast was okay. I still prefer Topolino's but the charter interactions were fun. Pluto especially enjoyed my new t shirt.

IMG_7124.jpeg

Yes, I wore the same shirt as the day before 🙈

And that's a wrap! Another fun marathon weekend in the books.

WDW Marathon 2025 Parting Thoughts
I'm very proud of the race and the training that went into it. I ran 700+ miles in the 19 weeks leading up to the race. This was about 90% of the planned miles and an average of 37 mpw. My max mpw was 52.8 at 3 weeks before the race. I'm not likely to follow this exact plan again because I really struggled with the T workouts, but I'm happy with the results.

I'm still a bit flabbergasted that my last 2.5 miles averaged an 8:22 pace! This is the second marathon in a row where I've felt like I had more to give. I'm sure some of that is because I'm so fearful at the beginning of doing something dumb and suffering the consequences. Been there & done that. But I do think that I have a few more minutes in me. My partner thinks I have at least 25 because one of the first things he told me was that I just needed to shave off 25 more minutes to BQ 🤣🤣. And he wasn't the only person to share those sentiments with me. Personally, I have much more realistic goals for the next time I run a marathon.

On the flip side, my legs were absolutely trashed afterwards. I was fine on Sunday but things were real interesting by Monday. I wasn't able to sit unassisted until Wednesday. My lungs may have been ready for more, but my muscles were maxed. As a result, I'd like to put a renewed focus on strength training.

One final note, my previous marathon PR was also at WDW in 2023. I'd have to go read the report to know how many stops I made, but I'm sure it was similar. What was not similar though is how I felt at the end. For comparison, the last 2.5 miles of that race were ~9:00min/mi pace. I was doing all I could just to get to the finish and still remember telling my partner not to ever let me do that again 😅. Famous last words.

Thank you for reading along and providing a place for me to relive the experience! Without this space, I don't think I would have realized how far I've come in the last two years. It may have only been a 3 minute PR, but my body was much more prepared for it.

Thank you for your amazing race report!
It’s funny because I can see our paths crossed a few times that day…
I was also in AK just around 7:10 and remember thinking those people waiting in line should have just chilled a little more in the first part of the race!
I also caught the end of « party in the USA » choir when I finished (although looking at my times I finished about 7 minutes after you so I wonder if maybe they were alternating between two songs?!?)
And also I saw you walking in the LL queue for Tiana while I was waiting in the virtual queue line (I saw the ears first and then recognized you from your race reports! It was like seeing someone famous! 😂) Unfortunately we didn’t get to ride (I was sad for my sister who was waiting for me to ride it and therefore missed her opportunity for riding it…) - we had to evacuate the queue right before we got on the logs
It looked like quite an emergency (every cast member just started running fast to some reunion point) so that was odd… clearly there was some major issue with the ride! How long were you stuck in the boats?

Congratulations on the amazing race and PR 😊
Thanks for taking the time to write your race reports - I don’t comment often but I was really inspired reading your Paris race reports, your training logs and loved reliving the marathon in your eyes!
Can’t wait to see what’s next for you! 💪

Now THAT is a finish line photo! Congratulations on the PR!!🎉
Thanks! I feel like I'm making a weird face, but it just shows I was too excited to remember to smile 😅

Woohoo! A PR with photo stops? You are a boss!!
Thank you! Aside from C&D and Donald none of the stops took more than 30 seconds so that certainly is a benefit of corral A.

Amazing job!!!
Thanks! 🥳

Congratulations on the PR well done 👏
Thank you!

Congrats on your race. PR and character stops? Pretty damn amazing.
Thanks!

Thanks for taking the time to write your race reports - I don’t comment often but I was really inspired reading your Paris race reports, your training logs and loved reliving the marathon in your eyes!
Can’t wait to see what’s next for you! 💪
How funny! We must have crossed paths at some point on the race. I hope the choir had more than two songs to sing. That would drive me batty to sing the same two songs for 4 hours.

I didn't time how long we were on the boats but it felt like at least 10 minutes. We were probably some of the last to evacuate because we were all the way at the top. Fortunately we all had other chances to ride. It really stinks for folks like your sister.

That is a GREAT castle pic!
Thank you very much.
