Running for my Disney - Now a PTR!

Wishing you a speedy recovery Zanzibar.

On the plus side you can use your rest time to write your TR ;)

I've just read your blog, very interesting.
I started training for an offroad marathon back in November ( I am not an athletic person so this was a big deal for me) By the end of December one of my lower legs was hurting every time I ran ( I have had problems with it swelling off and on since I broke it a number of years ago)
I stopped running, and at the time I was interested to read your posts on Compartment syndrome, and wondered if I was suffering from something similar. Luckily the pain went away eventually over a number of weeks (not sure if it was a shin splint?, but I still have the swelling problem), and I trained to walk the marathon instead. Please to say I completed it a week ago, and was even able to jog some of the way as well.
Good luck with your recovery, I hope you get a successful outcome from the surgery, and get to run your race :)

You did a marathon last week??? That's awesome! Congratulations! How long did it take you to walk it?

Generally with compartment syndrome the pain goes away as soon as you stop running, so sounds more like it could have been some sort of lingering effect from your old injury or something. If running is something you really want to get into, it would be worth finding a good sports doctor and getting a professional opinion :thumbsup2

I really don't like running, but I would like to be able to run if I want to with out pain.

The marathon was an off road one ( google Motatapu in NZ and you will find the details, it's a really large event over here), so it was undulating and on high country station tracks, through streams etc. I completed it in 7 hours, which involved a small amount of jogging, mainly on the downhills!. If you like stunning remote scenery and a challenge this is an AWESOME event that I highly recommend, I have no desire to do a road marathon, but I will definitely be doing this one again, I found it a very special experience, and have created memories I will treasure always :goodvibes

That sounds amazing! That's a great time for walking, well done :thumbsup2 I'm not sure I could do a whole marathon. Will have to see how I go with the 10k first.

I only took such extreme measures to overcome my leg issues because once I really started running I found that I loved it and wanted to continue doing it! If you do have compartment syndrome, it's probably not worth going through the whole process I have if you're happy walking.

No way could I run the full 43 kms. I got up to about 7km non stop jogging in training, if I didn't have the pain I would like to work towards 20 kms running and the remainder walking. The hills are just too hard to run up anyway!

There is no way I could walk that far!

Just a quick update for those who are not following my blog.

I'm pleased to say that I am now able to walk short distances around the house without crutches (which is much more convenient). The physio was very pleased with my progress :goodvibes However, I am still in protect mode til I see him next, which means continuing to only get up when I have to, and keeping my legs elevated at all other times.

In trip related news, we may be making a very big change to our plans (see Wanderlust it's not just you ;)). Will give more details when it's all confirmed.

In the meantime, I've been writing a list of what still needs doing. I don't think I mentioned that we got our insurance too. We purchased an annual policy before our Asia trip. I was actually ok with not being covered for my compartment syndrome, as it really shouldn't cause any further issues once I recover from the surgery. However, I was surprised when one of the quotes came back with coverage for me for a fairly reasonable additional fee, so we thought I may as well get coverage for it, just in case.

More information needed!

Well, maybe I can give you a little bit of information.

While we were in Asia, DH received an email from Etihad regarding our flights. It basically said they will honour the fares, but because we paid such a low price, we will not get any of the first class extras, including lounge access, chauffeur service, or bonus points :scared1: Alternatively, they offered a full refund on the fares.

Also while we were in Asia, DH found it very hard to be away from his business for so long, which definitely affected his mood towards the end of the trip.

We were only away for 2 weeks this time, and with those flights to the US, we'll be away for about 4 weeks. I can't imagine how DH would feel in those last couple of weeks having been away for so long! Also, it makes it harder to find a pet/house sitter, extra expense etc.

So long story short, we've decided we're going to go for the full refund, and book direct flights (now that we've missed all the great sales :rolleyes2). DH will come home after one or two days at DLR, making his trip about 2 weeks including travel time. I am considering extending my trip at the end for a DisMeet in Texas.

Wow, can they legally do that? It seems wrong that they are punishing you for their mistake.

At least though your new plans will work better for your DH. Bitter-sweet I suppose.

A Dismeet in Texas sounds like fun :)

Yeah I'm not sure of the legalities. DH said half the people in the US frequent flyer forum were planning to sue them, so we'll see how that works out :lmao:

It's disappointing that we won't get to fly first class, but I said I'd rather do it when we can just relax and know that we'll get all the special treatment, and have stopovers etc on our own terms. We'll get there one day if we just keep hoarding our points ::yes::

Hhmm, I would be interested in the legalities. It does sound a bit dodgy.

YAY. Good progress.; and I think I read that you could drive again. :thumbsup2

Oh wow! That is major change. Guess we'll find out your plans when you're ready to share.

A DisMeet? In Texas? How exciting. :goodvibes

No more trip updates yet, just another leg one.

It's been nearly 2 weeks since the surgery now, and I had a check-up with the nurse this morning. She was very pleased with how my legs are healing, I could even see the skin starting to mend together when she was changing my dressings. The dressings are gradually getting simpler and smaller, but for now I still have to make sure it doesn't get wet. I'll have to start putting plastic bags over my legs for showers, because they keep getting wet even though the dressings are supposed to be waterproof.

I've got another appointment with the nurse in a week's time. She's planning to remove the dressings then and she says I'll have tape after that.

You read my mind! I was wondering how you were getting on.
