Running for my Disney - Now a PTR!

I told you the pressure testing wasn't to bad:rolleyes1
I wonder how long the recovery will be after surgery??

YAY for you, zanzibar. Glad you have an action plan. Thanks for the update.

Glad to hear the test wasn't too bad and you are getting some answers with hope ahead! Now to secure the top surgeon for this condition and you will be set! (and no excuse not to be out there winning in the future once you have had more productive time to be prepared -will this be a little late what with recovery and all for decent preparation for the upcoming race?) You could bring us all along as your personal cheer squad?

Yay! I'm so pleased you're finally getting some answers AND solutions.

Recovery will be discussed at length with the surgeon. However, having done some googling, the usual time frame seems to be one week with crutches, exercise bike at 4 weeks, cross trainer at 6 weeks, back to running in 8 weeks.

I don't think I'll ever be winning anything :rotfl: But I'll certainly be out there having a go :thumbsup2 Yes, the time for training will be very tight for this run now. The sooner I have the surgery the better! Would love to have you as my cheer squad :goodvibes Can you fit in my suitcase? I get extra allowance being a first class passenger ;)

I'm pretty small as you know but all those hours curled up in a suitcase might get a bit claustrophobic and where will all your shopping go?
.....we'll be rooting for you from home! and I am still impressed you are participating (more than I could do) so just wishing you to achieve your personal goals.

Thanks for your support, means a lot to me to have a little DIS cheer squad, even it is from afar :goodvibes

This morning I went to see the surgeon. We discussed the pros and cons, it's actually not as straight forward as I thought and will require 2 nights in hospital and 2 weeks of putting my feet up with ice. However he said in my situation he still recommends the surgery, because my pressure results were one of the highest he's seen, and I'm so determined to do this run. So I'm booked in for the day after we get back from our Asia trip! Bit scared, but very excited that it all seems to be coming together!

WOW! That's a lot of time off your feet.

Best wishes with the process. It will all be worth it in the end.

I was reading Davids blog this morning and it made me understand a bit better why running for Disney is so popular. Thought you might be interested if you haven't seen it already.

Yep, it's a bit more serious than I first thought. Googling compartment syndrome really only gave me results from the US, and over there they seem to be offering day surgery for it. Having said that though, there are quite a lot of complaints that the surgery doesn't work. My surgeon said every surgery he has done has been successful :thumbsup2 I'd much rather have a bit more pain and suffering at the time than risk it not working!

I do feel for DH though having to do everything around the house while I'm out of action, when he's already going to be so busy with work :sad2:

Best wishes with the process. It will all be worth it in the end.

Yes, I'm convinced that it will all be worth it. One of the reasons why the surgeon recommended that I have the surgery is because the condition affects me even if I try to walk too fast. As well as the obvious advantages for running, I can't wait to be able to walk as fast as I like with no pain :goodvibes

Thanks for posting that link. I agree with a lot of the points mentioned (from my experiences so far of course). I think Mum and I are looking forward to the expo just as much as the run :rotfl:

Sounds like longer term it could be necessary anyway so go for it while young and fit. Good you have a holiday to enjoy and take your mind off it first. Any hospital visit is a bit scary but keep your eye on the goal.

I think I could get through life without having the surgery, I'd just have to work around it to a certain extent. I agree, better to have the surgery while I'm young and be able to do the things I want.

I hope I'll be able to forget about the upcoming surgery while I'm on holiday. I expect I'll be too busy doing all sorts of exciting things to worry about it :thumbsup2 And then I won't have much time at all to worry about it when I get back! So yeah, it kinda works well like that.

Thought it was high time I did another trip related update after all this talk of running and surgery.

I eventually did book us in to the KOA at Santa Margarita. If the double queen cabin isn't available by then, we'll stay in their biggest existing cabin, the Sunset Cabin. DH and I will push the mattresses in the loft area together to make a double.

The discount with a KOA card worked out to more than the cost of joining, so that was a no-brainer. I received my card in the mail the other day, which was fun!

In Santa Margarita we're looking at splitting up for the morning while the boys visit a shooting range, and us girls do some horse-riding. Anyone got any experience with shooting ranges in the US? It was Dad's request, and something I'm not at all familiar with!

Hmm what else? We've decided that we're going to go from Camarillo to Anaheim via Universal Studios. It will be a long day, but we thought it would be worth it to go while we've got the car. The other option was getting the tickets that included transportation, and I know from experience that is a very long and tiring day, and also works out more expensive for 4 of us. Last time we went it was very quiet and after lunch we were just kind of filling in time until the bus left. With the car, we'll have the option to leave any time we want.

We're looking at car hire options, and thinking that probably a small SUV (like a RAV 4) will probably be suitable for us. We'll have 4 adults and associated luggage (just one medium suitcase each plus cabin baggage), so I'm thinking that we'll all fit in a small SUV, otherwise we may have to upgrade to a larger one. Any recommendations?

I'm sure there was something else I was going to mention, but it seems to have slipped my mind for the moment :confused3 I'll pop back in and update when I remember :rotfl:

I'll be a bit quiet for the next couple of weeks, as we leave for our Asia trip on Friday, then I've got my surgery as soon as we get back :scared1:

Oh der! I got our 10 day park hoppers! How could I possibly forget that? :lmao:

Oooh! Lots of progress,

Congrats on locking in so much more! You can't have very much left to plan for this trip.

Have fun in Asia. Hope to catch up when you get back. :cool1:

That cabin looks great. :thumbsup2

Congrats for getting so much sorted and best wishes for your upcoming trip. I'm looking forward to hearing about it.

My family and I will be hiring a Standard size SUV for our road trip as our luggage (anything up to 6 medium suitcases, carry-on bags, and a cooler box to carry our food) just won't fit in anything much smaller.

However, with the smaller amount of luggage you have, you might want to consider something like a Camry. Cheaper than an SUV and your luggage is hidden from prying eyes when making day stops at places like Universal. Just a thought.

Have fun in Asia.

Our last 2 trips we have hired a Ford Taurus, very nice comfortable car with leather interior, with large boot which kept all our belongings out of sight on our long road trip. Think it is in the premium large car category.
