Runaway Bay at Calypso Cay

We stayed there 2 years ago. If nothing has changed since then, Runaway Bay is the section of Calypso Cay with rental apartments. I mean real rental apartments. The residents are tenants and live there year round.

One morning when we were leaving, I noticed a cat in one of the windows and commented to my family that it was nice they permitted pets. On another morning we saw a moving van. It wasn't furniture in keeping with what we'd seen in our unit. I had a timeshare tour, so I asked the salesman about it and he said, yes, they rent the apartments to year-round tenants.

There were no elevators in the buildings and we were on the third floor. The apartments were okay, not spectacular.

For the price, we couldn't complain too much. One of the tall high-rises on the Calypso Cay property has the timeshare units. Those were REALLY nice.

The complex has hotels.... Country Inn & Suites, AmeriSuites and I think something else. Runaway Bay is across the street (a small private street) from the hotels and the pool area for the hotels. Runaway Bay has its own pool, but the one for the hotels was really nice. We could use the hotel pool when we wanted.

It's an okay complex, and I can't explain it, but I didn't feel comfortable renting, in essence, a hotel room with others in the complex being permanent tenants. (Okay, I'm a crank.)

If the price is right, give it a try. Just ask them not to put you on the third floor (especially if you have bad knees like some of us.) I wouldn't stay at Runaway Bay again, though.

Hope this helps.

We were thinking about Runabay Bay with a time share to visit Calypso Cay. Hope you don't mind if I have a couple of questions. Did your aparatment have a balcony? How old was the apartment (was it well kept)? Is the area near a lake? Any recreation for kids?

Again, thanks so much for your help!

Hi, kdmkdm7:

Don't mind your questions at all.

The unit we stayed in was new two years ago. There were no balconies in those apartments. (We missed having one. After a day at the parks, nothing beats a couple of brewskis on the balcony before turning in.)

The apartments were clean. We had two bedrooms and two baths. Don't think there was a jacuzzi in the master bedroom. You have a full washer/dryer and kitchen with all the utensils.

There was a television in the living room and the master bedroom. I think there might have been a VCR, but I really can't remember. (We've stayed at so many of these places, some of them become a blur unless there are some distinctive positives or negatives.)

There was an alarm system, but we did not have use of it. One thing that bothered me was that there was only the door lock. There were not, at that time, those little bar/hook things that offer another means of security and keeping intruders out while you in.

We traveled with older children (16 and 11) so we really didn't need little children activities. There was a clubhouse that had a half-court for basketball which kept them occupied before and after park visits. There was also a pool. I really don't know if the hotel areas have children's activities. At the time we went, Runaway Bay guests had access to all the activities offered to hotel guests.

If the timeshare apartments are "Calypso Cay," those units are very nice. They are in a high-rise just like the hotels.

Remember, this was two years ago and they were still under construction, so they may have added a new section of apartments.

Again, we got a really good deal by taking the timeshare tour, so you kind put up with stuff.

Hope this helps. Will be glad to provide you with any additional information I can offer.

Have a happy trip!!!

We also stayed here in March of 2002. We got a great rate for 9 nights by doing the timeshare tour. We stayed in a one-bedroom.
The apartment was fine, nothing fancy, but it served our purposes. We only had a TV in the living room, not in the bedroom, and no VCR. We also had no balcony but did have a washer/dryer. We were able to take advantage of the free breakfast at either Amerisuites or Country Inn as part of our deal. Our kids were 2.5 and 5 when we visited and they loved the pool. It had a small waterslide, crabs shooting water and zero-depth entry. There was a small playground and a mini-golf course, both right in the pool area. It was a short ride to the Disney parks. When we stayed we were told the apartments were brand new. I don't think at that time there were many people living there but we were told they would be rented as living spaces. We were very happy with the place. We actually paid a deposit and agreed to come back and stay again to decide if we'd like to purchase timeshare there. We are going in November and staying in the Calypso Cay villas then. We were told that they are building a new, very large water park type pool, that should be done by the time we go. I don't know if this would be accessible to people staying in the Runaway Bay apartments. Hope this helps!
