i thought last summer that i read some rumors about CR having the wings rooms being torn down to build something else?... wondering if anyone has heard anymore about if that is true or not?
we would like to go back to CR when we go back to WDW....but right now it looks like we wont get back until winter of 2007.

just wanted to ask because we loved CR and really want to stay there again :)

thanks

oh yes the DVC rumor....

don't know.

DVC isn't saying anything neither is WDW.

although CM's at the Cont will tell you that it is happening....

When the wings are torn down and the new building is going up - then I might believe the rumors. Until then. don't worry.

the Tower will always remainder a hotel!!!

The following is taken from Mouse Planet:
"Contemporary to undergo construction; DVC coming?
The South Garden Wing of the Contemporary Resort is closed for refurbishment May 30 through October 31. This first phase of a major renovation for Disney's oldest resort hotel is badly needed, with the resort really showing its age. We hear that the new room decor will be done in earth tones with white duvets. The furnishings will be more up-to-date as well, with glass and steel desks and flat-screen or plasma televisions. Reportedly, a model room has been completed and looks very nice."

"The rumors that we hear is that the entire resort is repositioning to target a specific clientele. Or, rather, two specific clienteles. Supposedly, the buildings in the South Garden Wing will be gutted and rebuilt as Disney Vacation Club villas. The remainder of the hotel would be modified to target conventions, with families with children to be steered toward the Wilderness Lodge. We are still trying to confirm these changes."

This matches what I was told a few months ago, however it may just mean that the rumor is spreading futher. Personally, I am beginning to think this is more and more likely.

Why would the South Garden Wing be refurbished and then gutted? :confused3
Maybe it's the North Garden Wing that will be become the villas?

Is there actually enough space in either of the garden wings to do up a new DVC? I thought as the DVC progresses, they are looking at larger resorts. Seems like that would be more profitable for the DVC division. I'm not basing this on the actual number of rooms in the wings, just on how it looks to me when driving by on the monorail. Also, if it was to become a DVC resort, would it not make sense to somehow connect all of the buildings to the main building for easier access to the monorail...just my thoughts.

There isn't enough room to build a stand alone resort like OKW,SSR or even BWV, but they could easily put up a VWL / BCV type resort.

This strike anyone else as just a bit backwards? Sure, on the one hand it makes sense given the location of the convention center. However, you are talking about taking the resort closest to the Magic Kingdom (favored by families with children), and with a theme ("contemporary", or the backdrop to Tommorrowland) that instantly appeals to those same kids (or at least it did before the advent of oversize icon-obsessed architecture), and "steer" families away from it?

These rumors are completely believable (while probably not precisely correct in detail), though I would hope considerable thought (and perhaps a respect for history) will have gone into the project before casually discarding either the overall "theme" of the resort or - gasp - bulldozing portions of the hotel itself (garden wings). Disney has the unfortunate habit of paying very little notice to its own history. We've lost the World of Motion, Horizons, Vacation Villas, and Club Lake Villas completely to the wrecking ball. The Contemporary occupies a far more prominent place in WDW's past.

Finally, just how long ago was the Contemporary's last major renovation? I'm thinking late 90's? The general concensus - from the resort board on the Dis to other websites such as Mouseplanet - is that the place is badly in need of attention. But that has not been my observation. Quite to the contrary, while the room decor may not be to everyones taste, there is no arguing that its not "contemporary". And the condition has always been immaculate. I can't speak for the rooms which hosted Shades of Green for a time (though I might suspect some complaints arise from hotel conditions during or following that period), but I can find few faults with the south wings or tower over the past 2-3 years.

my DVC rep told me a while back that they may put smaller DVC buildings at CR and Poly in the future. It would make sense for DVC members to be on the MonoRail. Plus they would probably sell out rather quickly!

Oh my, if they put them at the Poly, I would feel like I had died and gone to heaven, (and then I would pick myself up off the floor and purchase there).
