Rumor: The Great Movie Ride closing for good?

Was it Mickey's name? I thought it was the name of the master sorcerer in Fantasia.

Could be. By that time in the ride, I'm usually asleep.

ETA - You are correct. Just looked it up.

What about "What is this Joisey"..lol That always cracks me and my girls up..
We do love the ride, my 5 yo dd calls it the Wizard of Oz ride..lol , but it definitely could use to be updated a bit.

That line was especially funny when we went during Jersey Week. :lmao: I think everyone on the ride except us was from Joisey and they all laughed. :rotfl:

I sure hope they don't close it, but yeah, it could use a little facelift.

I've been on GMR three times. The first time I didn't like it. Went on it a few years later, still thought it was lame. A few years after that tried it again....nah, it needs to be changed into something interesting.

The Great Movie Ride is the best! It's a relaxing ride and I love waiting in the line watching the old movie previews. I really don't believe that they would tear it down.

Being a movie nut, I really enjoy this ride but it needs updating. Maybe a few newer movies that kids would know. That being said I wouldnt want all references to the older movies gone either.

A side note.. While waiting in the queue once, when the clip from casablanca was playing some guy behind me pointed and said to his wife "Hey theres that Will & grace chick". I thought he was joking at first but he was serious and quite proud it seemed. :rotfl:

Keep the GMR but update the movie scenes

I love GMR but we can't ride it anymore. The first time I rode it with my DS's we were sitting in a row, just our family of four. I was sitting on one end, DH on the other, and the DS's in the center. My youngest DS was so scared, he screamed and crawled behing my back to hide between myself and the corner of the seat. He stayed there the rest of the ride, with me trying to console him. I'm hoping that he will grow out of his fear of that ride, so we can ride it again.

I wish they would give rehabs to GMR and Star Tours. They both need it bad. I also wish they would get rid of Indy Jones stunt show. It has been there way to long.

I seriously doubt that this is true. Forgive me if this has been mentioned (I didn't have time to read all of the entries) but they just did a rehab on the GMR in 2006 (I think). Did a major cleaning and re-vamped the ending movie scenes. With all of the new and old classics that will never change I don't see this ride as being obsolete for a looooooong time.:thumbsup2

I hope that they do keep the GMR, but you guys are right, it does need a make-over. I always hate to lose any of the old standards, but am sure happy when they add something new, kinda like having my cake and eating it too!:lovestruc

This is DEFINITELY a rumor at this stage of the game.. as such I've moved this thread over to the rumors & news board

And ironically a number of the movies seen in the GMR are neither MGM nor Disney films. Not that this much matters.

I don't think they will be removing the GMR, but if they did, it wouldn't bother me too much. I've done it 3 times and just thought it was okay plus it broke down the 1st time. A lot of the scenes are too old anyway and need updating for newer movies.

Awww. I would miss it terribly. But I do agree that a little nip and tuck might do the ride some good. It's always nice when they update the sound systems and add something new to enhance an attraction. :goodvibes

I too love the GMR and would hate to see it closed, which I doubt will happen- but an update would be awesome. In October when i rode it, there were a couple munchkins in the Wizard of Oz scene whose mouths were stalled out. The fake munchkins are creepy enough without them standing there open mouthed and staring at you. Plus, does any kid today even know what the heck Alien is?? :confused3 Maybe with the addition of the new Toy Story attraction, they will be able to close down the GMR for a while and rehab it. It never hurts to dream ;)

Let's give credit where due. They do change the entrance displays in the GMR from time to time. Last time I rode it they had some props from the Cronicles of Narnia and I have seen props from the Wizard of Oz and Indiana Jones in the past. And wasn't there a merry-go-round horse in there at one time? So, they do try to keep up with the times somewhat. ;)

When we were on our way to MGM, this past trip, our boat driver told us that when MGM becomes Disney Studios that they might tear down The Great Movie Ride. I would be so upset if they did this, I love that ride. For us it is a must do on every trip! Has any one else heard this rumor? Please tell me this is not true!!

Lets think about this for a bit:

First, the about the part "when MGM becomes Disney Studios". Of course, the new name is actually Disney's Hollywood Studios". Surely a CM would know better?

Second, the change is already effective but the ride is still open.

Third, "they might tear down..."; Sure, they might. They might also just to a rehab or a warm-over. Then again, they could do a complete revision which may require a tear down.

So, the rumor is either true or not. :goodvibes

It would be nice if they updated it. However, if it does undergo a massive overhaul, I'm betting dollars to donuts they change the outside as well... Sadly, I doubt that will cause them to remove the BAH however. :sad2:

But overall, I agree that it's in serious need of some TLC.

It amazes me that when cast member rumors such as this one are posted, there are always people you react along the lines of, "OH, NO! THAT'S TERRIBLE NEWS!!!"

It's not news. It's a rumor -- and not a particularly believable one at that.

I think that jusat because Disney wasnt able to renew the contract for the MGM Name for the park and all that stuff doesnt mean that they cant renew their contract for the rights to have the characters on the great movie ride.

But that is my thought

And i hope it doesnt close
