Rumor - Nikon buying Samsung NX mirrorless technology

Interesting. The downside is that Samsung wasn't doing full frame.

Still, if you married the Nikon 1 with Sansung NX and made it super compatible with all Nikon lenses.... Compelling.

What I'm gathering, if true, is that Samsung has designed a BSI Full Frame sensor. Their problem is their NX mount is not big enough for it. I would imagine a new Nikon mirrorless mount big enough to
incorporate FF.

All this follows Sony's announcement last month that they are going to invest $3billion in new Sensor Technology. I've been holding off on upgrading my NEX-7 and now I may wait a bit longer and see how this shakes out.

Interesting. How are Samsung's sensors, typically? Cuz I thought Sony made amazing sensors. I had no problems with Nikon using Sony's sensors. It was Nikon's autofocus that needed an upgrade to better battle Canon.

Samsungs BSI APS-C sensor dethroned Sony's APS-C sensor (used in A6000, A77iii and Nikon D7200 ) as best APS-C sensor (ranked by DXO). All the reviews on the performance of that sensor in the Samsung NX-1 have been very positive. The problem with the camera is the high cost and serious lack of lenses.

AF? Nikon's AF system is their strength.... best tracking AF of any camera. (See the write-ups in dpreview).
Nikon and Canon are pretty evenly matched overall, but where Nikon has trailed Canon is in live view, some video features, and some of the lens choices and pricing. Where Nikon has the advantage over Canon is sensor performance (though they aren't Nikon sensors) and AF system.

That's why IF (big IF) Nikon or Canon make a truly competitive mirrorless camera (the M3 is still a big step behind the Sony A6000 and Samsung NX systems), and it has real compatibility with the existing Nikon or Canon lenses... While such a camera won't have a huge size advantage over a traditional dSLR, but such a product would actually put Sony back on its heels a little bit.

Basically.. the Nikon Df is only slightly larger than the Sony A7rii. So imagine the body of the Nikon Df, with all the functionality of the Sony A7rii, but with the native support of the entire Nikkor lens collection.

You can get a Sony A6000 body at a really good price now... $400 new, $350 used.. You must be tempted...

Even I've been tempted, but I'm waiting to see if the A7000 has IBIS and phase detect AF on adapted lenses (with the new Commlite Nikon adapter).

Lol, that's what I'm waiting for as well. IBIS would match well with my growing stable of legacy lenses.

Yes, but in mirrorless the AF would all rest in the sensor ( which Samsung has done a great job with ). As far as lenses, assuming a new mount the existing lenses would be just as good as with an A7, correct?

Nikon has great on-sensor AF with the Nikon 1 system, but for some reason, they haven't expanded this onto larger sensors, for use with mirrorless or even just live view in dSLRs...
The 1 system is pretty awful, EXCEPT for the AF which is great.

The issue with using the same lenses on the A7ii and A7rii -- THey don't support adapted screw drive lenses, plus they don't get the FULL AF functionality. I haven't tried it, going based on what I've read. I know Eye-AF doesn't work on adapted lenses... I believe you might only be able to use Auto-AF modes, no point selections, but I could be wrong.
