Rumor from another board: Total selfie stick ban coming to DL!

Banning from the park is ridiculous. Used as intended (to take a group picture) harms no one. Using in a dangerous fashion should be cause for confiscation, but not for a guest using them in a safe manner. Should we ban strollers because they sometimes run into people? And no, I’ve never used one.
Unfortunately, they have no choice but to ban them completely. Even though they have banned them from the rides, it is causing them shutdowns daily because people still do it.
The ban is going in effect during my trip. :flower:

It sucks, but it's the right call for safety. The fact that people seem to be pants on head retarded and using them on rides boggles my mind. Used for their intended purpose, which is to be able to take group pictures with friends/family without having someone be cut out from the picture is fine. Using them on rides or to obstruct other people's views of parades and shows is not.

I think Disney is doing the right thing by banning them. They gave people a chance to follow the rules, ie: don't use them in rides. People didn't follow the rules, thus the consequence is banning the devices. Yes, the many are being punished for the actions of the few, but those actions are highly dangerous, therefore, I think the result was to be expected.

After watching people have to hike down from the very top of the highest hill on California Sreamin' due to someone using a selfie stick and getting it caught in the ride, I knew something would have to change. My 8 yr old daughter was in the car that was, thankfully, stuck on the bottom. She had a pretty easy walk out, but had she been one car sooner and been stuck at the top, things could have gone very badly. She has an anxiety disorder and may very well have had a panic attack from having to climb out of the seat at that height.

All that to say that Disney has to take responsibility for the safety of ALL of its patrons, and banning these sticks is best for the safety of all.

Users of these sticks will just have to go back to the old fashioned way and ask someone else to take a photo for them.

I'm actually shocked to hear they've been banned from the park completely. I'm good with the ban but can imagine they will get a fair bit of backlash from customers who don't understand.

I was at a family party a little while ago and a young niece wanted to use her new selfie stick. We went to a ton of effort so she could get all 20+ of us in a photo with a selfie stick. Sooo many other ppl around who could have taken the photo in 2 seconds :)

For some people, handing a phone to someone may not work. I'll use myself as an example, my phone is used for both personal and work use. Working for a government health care agency, I do have to adhere to HIPAA standards of confidentiality. If someone sends me an email and the first couple of lines include confidential information and it's seen by someone who shouldn't see it, I could be held liable for it.

Then there's the people who just may not trust people with an expensive camera or phone. People have their reasons and it should be respected.

There is also the option of Photopass to get your entire group in pictures. Or set you camera on a surface and use your timer. These are the things we were doing before sticks came into popular use.

I hope this doesn't turn into a debate about how people should be allowed to use selfie sticks. They became a legitimate safety hazard and Disney exercised their right to ban them. People will have to go back to taking photos in whatever manner they used "pre-selfie stick".

Sorry, but if you have a phone with HIPAA information on it, it should not be in Disneyland.

Sounds like you might want to invest in an inexpensive point and shoot camera. Your situation is so individual that that surely you can't expect Disney to make policy around it.

How does your employer feel about you using the phone in such a public place?
It's one thing using a work phone for personal use, when you are doing your day to day activities.
And another when you are visiting an amusement park whether it's a vacation or not.

I would be concerned if any of my personal/medical information was on your phone.

Back on Topic - Selfie Sticks...
It's too bad Disney has been forced to ban them completely.
I'm not a fan of the things. I carry a small point & shoot and I ask a CM to take the pic of our group. Or better yet, I love PP+.
There are many ways to have everyone in the picture without using a selfie stick.

This makes me very happy. I couldn't believe how distracting it was last time I was at WDW with everyone using selfie sticks (I really dislike them). What ever happened to talking with those around you and just asking them or a CM to take your picture.

If I see people trying to take a picture w/ one member missing (mother/father taking the picture), I'll always stop and offer to take it. I'm on vacation too, and I'd want someone to do that for my family. No selfie stick required. Just a bit of human interaction.
