If I book a Disney collection resort with points, I understand that if the reservation is cancelled, those points can then only be used for the Disney collection. My question is this - can I bank those same points and use them for a Disney collection resort the next year?

spiceycat is correct. You cannot bank reservation points. Reservation points cannot be used for DVC resorts or II exchanges and they expire at the end of the Use Year. You can use them for anything inthe Disney Collection, the Conceirge Collection or the Adventurer Collection. Hope you find a way to use them before they expire.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I believe you can deposit those points for an II stay (now) for use any time in the next two years. Might be worth considering if you're up against the wire to use them.

If you use DVC Points, you can book a week at a DVC resort and deposit that week into II (through DVC MS) for a future exchange into an II-affiliated timeshare resort on DVC's list.

However, once the points have been converted into Reservation Points (instead of DVC Points) due to a non-DVC reservation (such as DCL, Disney Collection or Concierge Collection), if you cancel, you can no longer use them for II. That's because II deposits and exchanges are based on depositing full weeks at DVC resorts with II, but Reservation Points represent points that have already been turned over to CRO, and thus can no longer be used to book DVC resorts.

I don't think that's correct. I specifically asked the exchange section of MS if you had a week scheduled and decided to deposit with II, could you do so. The answer was no. While I don't think this is the last word, I'd be cautious. Also, it would need to start on a weekend and be a full 7 days. What you could do is ask DVC to deposit a week for you and give them the parameters you need like what you want to use it to exchange for.

I assume the reason for this is if there is a wait list, those on the wait list would come first.

I agree that it would need to be a full seven days, but I disagree that it would need to start on a weekend.

According to my 2002-2003 Interval International Resort Directory (Marriott cover), the possible check-in days for an II exchange into any of the five listed DVC resorts are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Timeshare resort weeks don't always start on a weekend (although Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays are most common). For example, at Marriott's Cypress Harbour in Orlando, the possible check-in days are Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Twice, I've done II Bonus Week exchanges into Cypress Harbour -- both times for a Thursday check-in.

(A bonus week is an additional, though very restricted, exchange week that II provides as an incentive for the deposit of a high-demand week. There's a $199 fee involved for a bonus week. DVC's arrangement with II does not provide DVC members with bonus weeks.)

Werner, I noticed that. I also have a resort in MX that requires a weekend checkin to be deposited so I guess I just assumed that would be the case. I'd make sure.

Getting back to Reservation Points -

Say you have 50 points in Reservation Points because you cancelled a Disney Collection res -- you now want to re-use these points for a non-DVC resort at WDW but you need 52 points -- can you use your normal DVC points to add on the 2 extra points or can you only use the 50 Reservation Points you have sitting there???
