Rude public behavior

Yea, I thought maybe I was a little slow, but I still don't get it re: the child size meal. I mean, it's a portion. Establishment is providing a smaller portion, customer is paying a smaller price. Who cares who eats it? :confused3

I'm not cheap, but I'm also not wasteful.

Thank you for saying it 1st! I cannot finish an adult size ice cream so I am one of those that purchase a "child" size one for myself. I cannot finish a regular size and am not going to order one when a smaller size is available - even if it is supposed to be for a child. With that being said I will also order my 5 year old son a regular size one because he LOVES ice cream and will finish it. I order portion control not wallet control and if the owner doesn't offer a small "adult" portion then I will order off the kids menu. I have to ask....If I ordered a "regular" size cone and asked you to only give me 1/2 the portion, would you adjust the price or would you charge me the same amount? I would rather order a smaller size than KNOW I am throwing it in the trash and wasting it!

My hubby and I end up sharing a small size ice cream...because I eat 5 bites and that's enough for me.

You are so right it's portion control not being cheap.

I was going to stop at ten, but this last one is officially my all time biggest pet peeve. When I take your order, don't start it by saying "I need...." unless you want me to reply with "Do you really need...?" Whatever happened to manners? OMG! I count at least 5 to 10 people a day who say this.

Anothe poster was right. It really does feel good to get this off your chest.

I agree completely! What did happen to manners???

Yes, why get the bigger one and have to throw half away!! Also there are many times that DH or I run into Baskin Robbins/Dairy Queen and place the whole order for kids cones and all while the rest of the family is waiting in the car. So like the PP said, who's to say I'm not ordering for a child?

Andrea

Pet peeve - Clerks or other shoppers chewing and popping their gum. You all look like a cow chewing its cud. It's not cute, it doesn't make you look cool and no one wants to see or hear it. :headache:

What a great thread, I just opened it for the first time and found myself laughing and agreeing with lots of these!

As far as the child sized/adult sized issue, I've had gastric bypass surgery, and can only eat small amounts of food. I've never ordered from the child's menu, because it's usually deep fried stuff that I'd just as soon avoid, but knowing I can eat very little of what I order, I hate to let stuff go to waste.

And in an ice cream shop, I can tolerate a very small portion of ice cream, anything larger will make me sick, whereas my DD10 would have a fit if I ordered her a child size cone or dish. So, I would be likely to order the child size for myself and a regular for her. Many times though, I will just order the small and have them put just the tiniest amount of ice cream in a dish, because that is all I can tolerate, and I still pay full price.

I hate it when people spit on the sidewalk. Is that really necessary?? It's mostly MEN that do this. Is it some kind of "macho thing"?

It's just gross and unattractive.
This is one of my biggest pet peeves. Or in the parking lot, I don't want to see it or step in it, or when people in front of me open their car door and spit...it makes me gag every time. YUCK!

My other big one is smokers who throw their cigarette butts out of their car.:furious: If it is too gross to go in the ashtray, then maybe rethink putting it in your mouth. I hate to see piles of cigarettes when I am stopped at a light because people think the world is their ashtray. Thank you to the smokers that properly dispose of their cigarettes.

Wow, that does feel better!

I also used to work at a Blockbuster, so I can TOTALLY relate!!!

seriously, no one knows the hell of working at blockbuster unless you've actually worked there. you can't even BEGIN to imagine how it is. i mean, people waiting for HOURS on Tuesdays before the store even opens for a friggen movie. and knocking on the doors to try and get in before we're supposed to open. PEOPLE......they're just movies!!

if you want a whole tray of sandwiches and you call at 11am wanting the tray for 12pm.....don't get bent out of shape if i tell you i can't do it. it's lunch time and you're calling last minute and you HONESTLY think that yelling at me is going to make me move faster? right. if anything, now i am going to move slower. i can't tell you how much this happens. and that nice comment of "oh you guys do this for me all the time" no.....we don't. don't try to lie to me because I'M here all the time, YOU'RE not!

This is my pet peeve. You are in the ladies restroom and going to use the toilet.
My DW is blind. You can understand why she avoids public bathrooms as much as possible because she is convinced that most women are nastier than men when it comes to bathrooms. Trying to go with small children was another joy for her.

Good luck in your store and relax or you will get an ulcer and not be able to eat your own product.:cool2: Have a MICKEY bar. (there was no smilie for it)
I've got to agree because if your number one pet peeve is people saying "need" instead of "want or would like" then you really need to loosen up. If I got a smart aleck reply from you (as you indicated that you would give), it would be your manners in question, not mine.

I agree. There seem to be far too few of you.

i hate it when someone tells me "you NEED to do such-and-such" excuse me?? i don't NEED to do anything you tell me, i will do what i want to, thanks!

It's funny how the people who disagree with people's examples of rude public behavior are the very people who behave in the way that makes us so annoyed. There's no debate here because you can't justify your behavior in a way that will make it appear polite, curteous, or considerate.

No, there's no debating you, because I don't think you don't want debate, discussion, or anyone else's viewpoint. It seems to me that you have your mind set, and despite the fact that numerous other people have posted stating an opposing position, you clearly don't give them any credence.

I have to wonder why you opted to go into a business that requires such attention to customer service and the ability to deal with the general public daily. I'm not flaming you, just trying to understand. Some (not all) of the things you seem to be upset about appear, even to some people who have worked in similar jobs, to be minor. I just can't see choosing this type of business if I wasn't willing to deal with the public and not get upset by the little things they do.

5. Adults who order a childs item for themselves. (This may be my all-time biggest pet peeve.) It says "child" for a reason. You are not a kid, although you do act like one.
.

7. People who park their cars in front of stores to pick-up/drop off people. If you are too important to use the parking lot, maybe you should stay home.

The size portions are better on the kids menu. Also some of the "plain" food is located on the kids menu

I hope you are never one of those people who need to be picked-up or dropped off. As most of those people are in pain or have some type of illness.

Here is a few of mine:

People who stereotype

txt talk or people who will cut a word short by one key stroke. :confused3

People who don't use a turn signal.

But the one thing that I could really do physical harm to someone about is those who pull out in front of me only to go 100ft down the road and turn. :furious:

  this line cracks me up! Just for the record...no we don't! When I worked overnights I had a guy insist we cash payroll checks overnight all the time...I told him "no we don't, I'm here all the time and I NEVER do" his response was "well, the other girl does" Funny thing...the other "girl" was a guy!

Personal space - that is my big issue. Whether driving down the highway and having the motorist behind me basically join my son in the backseat or....this is the worst....becoming far too physically familiar with the person behind me in line at a hot, crowded, Florida theme park in June. In the case of the latter, you know what works really well? This is the epitome of passive-agressive, I love it: The hand-on-your-hips-turn-sideways move. It takes some practice, but it's pretty smooth :thumbsup2

Hahahaaa!!! I have perfected that move, myself. I call it "the Jack LaLanne".

You correctly noted the numerous opposing viewpoints to my list of pet peeves. It's funny how my list struck so many nerves in the people who I would consider "guilty" of the offenses I presented. The debate here should not be about how I run my own business. If there is to be a debate it shold be about what is considered "rude public behavior" as the title of this thread indicates.

To answer your question about why I would go into a business that requires such attention to customer service. I bought a store because after 15 years of providing exceptional customer service and making money for someone else, I decided that it was time to work on my own and to raise the bar on the service experience. I love retail and customer service. The truth is that the VAST majority of my customers are not rude and do not try to bend the rules all the time.

To me it is all about respect. I feel that everyone should respect the policies that are set in an establishment. The problem is that companies like Disney and Starbucks (both of whom I have been a store manager for) bend too much for customers and have created an environment where you trully expect too much. As a single-store, small business owner, I would go out of business if I gave the store away. Those others won't. I want my customers to come back because they like the product and the service that I provide. Not because they know I am a pushover and will give them anything they want.

Fortunately for me, the rude people who I have spoken about are very few. And while there may be many of you who disagree with me here on this board, the truth is that you are all Disney guests, many of whom have a sense of entitlement just because you give someone your business. While I would never tell you that from my side of the counter, I have seen many customers (see VAST majority above) who respect and appreciate the service that I provide, and WILL tell you what I may be thinking.

Just keeping it real. :cool2:

ExDIS vet, perhaps you should not offer a child's size? Maybe offer an extra-small instead, raise the price a bit and be done with it.
