I just had the strangest call from someone I don't know. The caller ID said "AmEx Merchant" which I took to be American Express, but I'm not sure. No one here has an AmEx card anyway. Here is the call:

Me: Hello?

Caller: I need to speak to the owner.

Me: Excuse me?

Caller: Let me talk to the owner.

Me: I'm sorry - who is this?

Caller: Michael

Me: And who do you need to speak to?

Caller: The owner.

Me: The owner of what? What is the person's name?

Caller: If I knew, I would have told you already.

Me: Well, if you can't give me a name, then this conversation is over.

Caller: Listen you ******* ***** (insert words that sound like 'trucking witch' here), let me talk to the owner.

Me: :scared1:

I hung up after that. He started out the call rudely and was enraged by the time he was cursing. What would you have done? I hung up because I was kind of freaked, but now I'm wondering if I should have asked for a supervisor and reported his language.

Strange call. I would just forget it as a misdialed number.

I would have hung up and if he calls again I would ask to talk to a supervisor. You could also always call back and say someone just called my number and ask why they were call and then say what happened.

Amex Merchant is for credit card processing services and the person is thinking they are calling a business, but clearly not great customer service at Amex Merchant services if they are talking to people like that.

I would have said you have the wrong number and hung up.

I'm very curious why did you continue to engage him once you realized he had the wrong number? Why do you care what the person they were calling's name is? What difference does that make at all :confused3

If they told you the name would the outcome have been any different?

I didn't know he had the wrong number. There are four people living in this house, and I was trying to get a name so I could tell him if the person he wanted was here or not.

I would have just hung up, back when he didn't know who he was calling. I would assume it wasn't any kind of real call, if he couldn't even tell you who he was trying to contact. Just hang up and move on...don't give him a second thought, some ppl. are just stupid.

We get "owner" calls quite a bit. For some reason our phone number was flagged somewhere as a 'business' rather than a residence. As soon as we get one of those calls we tell them we are not a business and ask to be taken off their list. (For future reference, OP).

Sorry they cussed at you. Crazy way to do business, that.

If you have caller ID I would call back and see if it is a business and report it to someone higher up.

I hate that! I have gotten a few, although none have cursed at me. Typically I say, "I think you have the wrong number."

Dawn

Just forget about it. If he cursed at you you can bet he wouldn't have connected you to his superior. Unless you have a # to report the incident I would just drop it.

do not call dot gov will eliminate most of these types of calls.
They are required by law Not to call after you register your numbers (home/cell/etc) Fines are issued for offenders.

I generally say "you're calling a private unpublished number pls remove our number from your list, Thanks" and I hang up.

I probably would have said something to make him madder. I'm like that.

"Now, really young man, there's no reason for that kind of language. You kiss your mother with that mouth?" Probably would have sent him right over the edge. Kill 'em with kindness.

#1 reason why I don't have a landline.
Interesting. I'm a little confused how not having a landline could prevent someone from misdialing their intended number and getting you instead - especially where so many people ported their home numbers to their cell phones :confused2:

I get ZERO unsolicited phones calls to my cell, my landline I would get multiple a day.
