With the upcoming royal wedding I wanted to have British food. What would be some ideas other than fish and chips or scones for breakfast???

Fry up (Fried egg, fried tomato, fried sausage, fried bacon, toast, hash brown, black pudding, beans, fried bread (coated in a mix of egg and milk first) coffee/tea, orange juice, fried mushrooms)

Cereal (e.g. corn flakes) soaked in milk

or

Porridge with jam/treacle/sugar/salt

or

Toast with butter or preserves (or both)

Bangers & Mash
Shepherd's Pie
English Breakfast
Curry dishes (most of the India food we know is really British)
Beans on toast

I don't have any suggestions, but I'm also planning a British brekkie as they like to say! And I don't care when my husband and kids say it's corny.
:snooty:

I saw a show about the Royals the other night and I found out that Prince Charles wanted Prince William to be called Arthur (one of his middle names), but princess Diana wasn't having it.

Also, Prince William uses the last name "Wales" on legal documents. I always wondered about last names and the Royals.

I will be up and watching and I think this is a great idea!! I can't tell anyone in my house what I'm doing, they will think I'm crazy!
I will be on the watch for what everyone else is having so I can pick the best stuff.

Is everyone getting up a 4am Eastern to watch the Today show, or are you watching something else?

That's what I was going to ask. It looks like every major station is going to be broadcasting the wedding, I don't know which one to choose! I want the best coverage, so I guess I'll be constantly changing channels. I do have a crush on Shepard Smith on FOX, so I'll probably stick mostly with him.

I wish we could have a Royal Wedding Dis Meet so I have someone to ooh and aah with at 4 o'clock in the morning!

For breakfast try some Marmite on toast :)

As for other meals roast beef with yorkshire pudding.

Claire ;)

What you described as fried bread is what we would call eggy bread and would not be served with a Fry up. Fried bread is just a Slice of bread shallow fried in hot oil. Yes it's artery clogging but delicious, for a proper "full English" you also need fried or grilled mushrooms. I love to cover my fry up in Worcester sauce with Brown sauce on the side.

Other English dishes you could do:

Lancashire hotpot
Beef stew and dumplings
Sausage Stew
A roast with all the trimmings. roast Beef with yorkshire pudding and horseradish, roast pork with apple sauce, lamb with mint sauce.
You could serve afternoon tea cucumber sandwiches, scones with Jam and clotted cream and cups of tea.
Cornish Pasty's
Boiled bacon with Pease Pudding
Savloys and Chips
If you're doing sausage and mash don't forget the onion gravy.
You also could do Pimms it's an alcoholic mixture that you mix most commonly with a combination of Soda Water and ginger ale in a jug with ice, strawberries, cucumber, apple, lemon and mint. It's got a slightly spicy taste to it but is very refreshing.

I'm not familiar I just printed what Jamie Oliver said. :) It all sounds interesting!

As you will be watching in the a.m. --a full English breakfast, as served to American tourists and people on holiday AKA "vacationers." Get your chafing dishes ready. Study your Agatha Christie/Dorothy L Sayers novels to check the authenticity and prepare to pack on a few pounds.

1. Starter: Porridge. Make it from scratch, preferably overnight. Instant oatmeal is not an option. Serve with cream and honey or salt and butter (for the purist). No soggy American cornflakes or instant cereals allowed.

2. The big stuff: Eggs (choice of boiled, scrambled, poached or fried). Grilled sausages, mushrooms and tomatoes. Add some deviled kidneys, a couple of lamb chops, bacon (get the real British stuff not the fatty US variety). Add "fried bread." This is just bread fried in the grease of the above. Unexpectedly delicious even though it sounds gross.

3. If the above is too much -- kedgeree. Find a good authentic recipe preferably from the Raj. This is white fish, rice and chopped boiled eggs in a light curry sauce. Yummy!

4. Toast. Make in advance and serve in a rack so it is room temperature and quite leathery. Have butter and marmalade available to spread on toast. Note: marmalade, not jam or preserves.:scared1:

Born British and as old as the hills. Ate a lot of this stuff in my early years (and it can be delicious) but rarely for breakfast! I love most of it for dinner. :)
I don't think many others had breakfasts like this either, but it is supposedly "traditional."

FYI, Marmite is reserved for tea-time along with the Gentlemen's Relish, cucumber, and fish paste () crustless sandwiches.

We're going to a tearoom for afternoon tea after the royal wedding :) But its a get together of all the women because Im getting married the day after them :)

But since the pre wedding stuff starts at 4am we're just doing Mimosas and scones and bangers :)

When is the wedding? Is it tomorrow morning? I thought it was later in the week.

Also, Prince William uses the last name "Wales" on legal documents. I always wondered about last names and the Royals.

Prince Edward always used Windsor as his last name. That was before he got married and became an Earl, though.

Legally the last name of the Royal Family as I understand it is Windsor for the House of Windsor. Although out of deference to Prince Phillip with Charles and Anne got married the first time they used Mountbatten-Windsor on their Banns of Marriage.

But it is customary for them to use their territorial designations as a last name. So William and Harry use Wales in school and in the military. Their cousins Beatrice and Eugenie use York as their last name. Edward and Sophie I believe use Wessex.

Roast beef and veg with yorkshire puddings.
And a nice steamed pudding with custard for dessert.

Ohhh you must try a "full English" just once! They are gorgeous but so bad for you.

It is funny that when I'm doing a proper breakfast for my DS rather than a bowl of cereal he begs for an "American Breakfast" Pancakes, syrup and bacon. It's more exotic to him. :)

If you need more dessert ideas try an Eton mess!
