Roxymama's 5k to Marathon, Time to Collect Another Castle

Just keep it easy. Head to the doctor if you need to (the sooner probably the better). It's better to catch something early, than be stubborn and it become something bigger. You still have to keep your "A" goal in mind and still have plenty of time to get there.

Sad about your foot, but sometimes things happen. Rest it, and if it really doesn't get better within the next few days, head to a doctor. It's better to have the doctor say that you need the rest than to risk aggravating the problem.

Sorry your foot is still giving you trouble! You are very smart to rest it, though. I tried to keep running through my first run injury and made things so much worse!

Thanks everyone for making me feel a little better about taking this time off. I hope it's shorter than longer. Thoughts from roxymama this weekend:
A) My foot doesn't hurt all the time! This is great progress from last weekend. Yes, I still feels uncomfortable and a bit weak and occasionally does hurt (as opposed to just soreness) after walking around or standing too much. BUT I can walk on it for awhile before it feels bad and I take that as a win. It seems to me each day it is improving. I'm still nervous to try running on it.
B) It still doesn't feel totally right and so I think I'm going to try to have my dr. poke around at it a little later this week. Unfortunately my work is not a place where I can choose when to see a dr. I have to make sure everyone else's schedule is ok with me being off for a few hours. HARUMPH!
C) I miss running. Crazy right? Old me would be so excited and happy for any excuse to not have to excercise. And here I am, wishing I could just go go go. The weather was perfect this weekend and although I enjoyed it...I kind of wanted to run around in it too.
D) I'm also annoyed that I can't just do all my regular normal active mom things without babying my foot. Like racing around the block with my kiddo on the bike or swinging her around in the air in the backyard, or chasing her up and down the hills at the local park, etc. It's like when you have a cold and your nose is all stuffed up and then you miss when you didn't even have to think about your nose and you reminisce about what it feels like to have a non-stuffed nose...it's like that but with my foot.
E) My mother's day weekend was fantastic besides all of that. Even managed a trip around Target on Sunday for "no reason" (which is my favorite) without to my much foot griping.
F) We are working on re-modeling our bathroom soon so at least I'm distracted with something else to obsess over for now :)

I've been following along on other people's race recaps and look forward to hearing about Tink weekend from everyone on that thread.

Good news on the progress for your foot! Hopefully it will be back to normal soon. Getting a doctor to take a quick look seems like a good idea though if you can. I remember the first time I had to stop running for a time due to an injury and how surprised I was at how much I missed it. Never would have guessed that a few years ago.

Hope you had a lovely Mother's Day.

Glad that foot is feeling better, I know all too well how frustrating it is to take time off. But you're doing the right thing!!

So I've spent more time posting in other people's threads than my own lately because I'm just not doing too much running-related things over here. BUT...my foot is feeling really good today. Granted I have not walked much more than to my car and from my car to work and to the coffee machine. BUT I can tell you those little walks the last few weeks resulted in some not great feelings. So I'm in a pretty good mood about it.

My game plan tonight is to go for a walk. As a family if that works out, just by my lonesome if it does not. I'm not sure of two things.
A) What kind of walking speed is approriate. I'm a pretty fast walker when I'm just going about my business, but my thought is to maybe just go with nothing that resembles a power walk for now?
B) For what kind of distance or time? Walk until it feels not great...if it feels fine keep walking? Maybe just do the little mile loop by my house since it can be cut short literally anytime since I can just walk through the side streets?

I would categorize myself as risk-averse. It would explain why it took me over a year to run farther than a 5k and I can't tell you how many years prior to that to even start running. So to say I'm babying this thing is an understatement. But I really worry about messing things up. But I miss running more than I ever thought that I would. I'm not opposed to throwing some intervals in this weekend if today's walk is not a total disaster. Any recs for a good "coming back" interval...I haven't done them since maybe May of last year?

I guess I'll share some fun pictures of food I've made in the mean-time. We skipped Blue Apron last week because we were in Cincy and it would have been a waste. But I'm happy to be back at it this week.

Roast pork with potatoes and greens and goat cheese!!!

This was from Top Chef but used dark breast chicken instead of duck. It had mushrooms and oranges and chipotle sauce. Was speecy.

I made a Korean pork one on Monday that was so good that I forgot to take a pic. Making Greek pizza tonight :)

Thanks for asking Sarah!
Well I just got back from a 2.53 mile walk n' run :)
But rewind to end of last week. My hubby had to work late (like past 11pm) two nights in a row. So I decided to take my little to the park and I wore just my normal walking around shoes and it was fine.
Yesterdays schedule was too packed and this morning my hubby ran (And PR'd!!) a 5k this morning while I took the kiddo to swim lessons. This afternoon I just decided to put on my running shoes and see what happened.
Immediately after lacing them up my foot felt all wrong in my shoe. It didn't feel that way in any of my other various work and walking shoes end of this week. I think my shoes have reached their expiration. I think I already knew that but just wanted to wear them through my last 10k. Think that was the mistake. They almost make my inner ankles roll in a smidge.
So I walked for .25 and it felt not right. Not painful, but not right. So I jogged for about two blocks, walked two, jogged two and was back at my house. I stood staring at my house (I don't know why.). Then I sat at my porch..like I was waiting for some magical decision on what to do next to land on my head. Then I went inside and my hubby asked how I felt. Ummm???? Fine, my food felt weird but now it actually felt kind of fine. So he said go run a mile and see. So I did and then a little more. 2.53 at 14:03 (included my initial walk breaks and my pacing in my living room which was at about 22:53 pace, haha)
Soooooo....my foot feels better out of the shoes and in my fuzzy slippers. I'm doing the wait and see on how it feels an hour from now and then two hours from now and then when I wake up, etc.
I'm optimistic but I really think it's now or never on the new shoes. Luckily I saw my father in law today who handed me a $20 off at road runners so that's a sign right?
Dinner now, GOT later, and then pray the foot is happy.
I love running, though. That was confirmed with how I love how I feel when I'm out there, even when just 2.53 miles of walk n' running :)

My foot feels okay today.

I'm typing this very small so that it delays the effects of any jinxing.

I'm tempted to run again tonight if schedule allows or at least tomorrow just to see if everything will be okay.

Back to normal font.

I didn't get a chance to run last night since the hubs had to work late again (poor thing), but I did take my kiddo to the "mountain park" which is what we call a park that is very very hilly by us. My foot held up for that. It's feeling a tad stiff this morning but back to normal mostly now.
So tonight I will either run outside (my hope) or on the treadmill. I prefer outside just because I can ease up or speed up so much easier.

I mentioned on the running thread that I signed up for the Run for the Zoo in Lincoln Park Zoo for June 5th. It's a 5k. There was a 10k option and I had to wrestle with myself over the fact that just because I've now run a 10k doesn't mean I'm less of a human or runner for not signing up for the 10k this time. I have other 10ks and longer on the docket later this year. This gives me time to go proper shoe shopping on Saturday instead of my original freak out idea yesterday at lunch to order from zappos and return if they don't feel right. Because I felt like I was "running out of time" to get new shoes. (I can get panicky for no reason sometimes.)
So now I run tonight and see how it goes. Get my new shoes on Sat. and work on a new plan for now to my Remix 5k/10k challenge in July.

In other news, I cooked quinoa enchilada's last night and my entire kitchen is covered in quinoa. Seriously. The entire kitchen. I will be cleaning up quinoa for the next year.image.jpg

I actually LOLed at this. That quinoa gets everywhere!

And I definitely get what you're saying about 5K vs. 10K. Sometimes its hard to accept that just because you can do something, doesn't mean you have to do it. Sometimes the shorter race can be just as awesome as the longer race.

HEY!!! Sorry to hear that you too are injured!! It's so frustrating right??!

I've some more catching up to do on your journal but wanted to say hi!

Was it good though??!

Thanks for stopping by! It was good, but it needed meat..haha! Actually I did like it and it was so filling I only ate one. So the leftovers are here at my work with me for lunch. I'd have liked it better with sour cream and more cheese but that defeats the purpose of trying a healthy alternative.
@SarahDisney Those little red granuals once wet stick to everything!! My hands, the strainer, spoons, the floor, the cabinets...ugh.

So last night I ran for about .34 miles with my kiddo in her stroller because she said she wanted to come with me and then changed her mind. All well and good. Pushing an almost 4 year old is not that easy fyi. Then I dropped her off with my hubs and went back out. And then about three blocks in and foot pain. ARGRRRRRR
Same foot pain I had right after my 10k. So I walked some and it eased up and then I started running and I just starting saying Nope, nope, nope, dangit, nope. So I walked back home. Grrrr

I think I've come to terms with I just may have plantar fasciitis. I am going to go to the dr. if I can find time this week (going to the dr. is like the hardest possible thing to do fyi in a busy city when there are A - no appts, B - your work frowns on you ever not working and C- they reschedule your appts. So wish me luck on the seeing the doc and also on me figuring this out.

I have a feeling foot stretches are in my future, new shoes are in my future, new non-run shoes I'm guessing (that have better support than my current wal mart flats I always wear.)

I'm super bummed and annoyed. I thought all the rest was helping (which I'm sure it was) but I was hoping my problem had just magically gone away. Of course this happened the day I signed up for a 5k on June 5th. If anything, I'll walk it.

Siiiiiggggghhhhhh

Note to all my thousands of readers (haha): Hill train before running a hilly race. Don't go over a year without new shoes. Don't run a hilly 10k without proper hill training while wearing old shoes.

Frown-face

:worried:

Don't worry. You'll be back in no time. Going to see the doctor for a proper diagnosis is a good choice.

No no no no no no

Smart of you to go to a doctor...makes my skin crawl when people refuse to do that when there's an issue going on! I hope you can get in soon.
