thinking of bringing a router on our upcoming trip -

At the recommendation of others on these boards we purchased an Apple Airport Express. It's small, works like a champ and is good for PC's as well as Apple products. I can't tell you the specifics (that's DH's department) but they work great!

Since no one will be home to use it when we travel, I just haul my Cisco Valet home router along.

The AirPort Express would not work for the OP as they have a laptop that does not have WiFi capability. The AirPort Express only has one ethernet connection which is used to connect it the the ethernet jack in the villa.

correct - I need the laptop to have a wired connection. I also want to spend under $35 . . .

anyone have an opinion on the two I posted?

I can't speak on those specific routers. I have had luck with products from those manufacturers that I have used in the past. I think you'll be fine with either one as they are both wireless N. Currently I am using a Netgear Wireless G Router that I picked up from Radio Shack, on sale, in the price range of those units you posted. It works quite well in spite of being an inferior standard to wireless N. I also purchased a usb wireless adapter for my "wired" cpu which works great. I can use the laptop anywhere within range, even on the balcony. You can pick up a decent one from amazon for around $10 or less. We use a notebook pc, a MacBook, iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch with our router with no issues.

I use a travel router...I believe it's a Linksys. Small, portable, we use it wireless but I believe it has a cat 5 port on the back that you could connect hardwired.

I have 3 travel routers. One is a D-Link G, one a airport express and one a Trendnet N router. Unfortunately all must be connected wirelessly. IMO, trying to get a router to hard wire then do the other options wireless is not the best option but it is the cheapest. One can get a USB wireless connector for the laptop and then use a smaller wireless router. A little more expensive up front that buying a larger router but much better in the long run, IMO. Another option is a travel router and buying a new laptop or netbook. Target just had one of the in betweens for $250 with a $50 target card. It had 2 gig of memory, a 11.6 screen and Windows & premium. A third option is to bring a home wireless router and a travel router which can also act as a wireless access point. Then when you move pass this particular laptop, you'll have a travel router option.
