I stayed up until midnight to book a flight from Boston to Orlando for Easter week next April. I had to do this in order to get 2 frequent flyer tickets. However, I also have to purchase 3 more tickets. I was going to wait to book the cash tickets until the return date. The agent told me that I was more or less crazy to wait. She said that she could get me a rate of $109.50 one way and if I call at midnight next week, I should be able to get the same rate for the return flight (total of $219). I told her that I have been seeing a rate of $189 roundtrip for the previous week. I tried to find out if the one way inventory is the same as the round trip. For example, when I call to book my return flight, will delta add new round trip fares or will all the low fares be gone, because they were used for the one way fare. I know this sounds confusing, but what I am trying to find out is if the same inventory is used for one-way as it is used for round trip?
I put a hold on the one way tickets until midnight tonight. I checked the one way fare today for the same flight and it has gone up to $368.50! So, I can't keep re-booking the one way. I have to decide today if I want to book the $109.50 ($219 total) or if I want to take a chance to see if the $189 price will open up at midnight next week.
I would love to hear from anyone who knows how the airline inventory works.
