my cat peed on the sofa.. its dry now but it stinks..

i have tried the white vineager trick.. didnt work!

i have read that i should use an odor remover..

any one have any recommendations of a good one?

any thoughts on the ultraviolet lights??

Cat pee is the absolute worst to get out og anything... one of the big things is to make sure whatever cleaner you use soaks the urine spot completely and dont judge if it works til it is completely dried. They make specific cat urine removers.. I would use Natures Miracle or Simple Solution. Both are very good and effective.. just follow the directions and you should be good.

We use Pet Stain Off - you can buy gallons of it online. It is the ONLY product that ever worked for us. It is a bit of process to use it, but it is worth the extra effort. The stuff we buy at Petsmart, and other stores just didn't compare.

It sounds like your cat is upset - they don't deal with change at all. We moved our furniture around and a couple got their noses out of whack and we had the same deal. We had to just move things back and used a Feliway plug-in to calm them down a bit. It would be a lot easier if they just told us what their issues were! :headache:

It is amazing how such a small move makes them so mad!! I hope he gets over it and stops peeing all over the place!

We are still dealing with the aftermath of leaving our cats while we went to Disney two weeks ago. Yuck! We have one cat who is just awful when she is upset about something. Nothing is safe!

I used this solution with a lot of success:
15oz of hydrogen peroxide 3%
2 teaspoons of baking soda
2 1 tbs. liquid soap

Mix it together and test it first. It took the odor out for us.

Sounds like my stinker kitty. I have used Urine Gone with success! It is available in our area at drug stores, I think Target, Bed Bath & Beyond etc...., I think they give you a little black light with purchase. Good luck!

Wow...are you sure he doesn't have a bladder infection? How old is your cat? Has it been nuetured? That's a lot of pee, I'm just sayin'...I would tend to think my cat had an infection or something.

Good luck with that pee. Cat pee ruins everything, man, you can't get that smell out no matter what. Even with those fancy odor cleaners.

I agree he may have a urinary problem. I have had cats go to the same spot and pee if you move the box but never pee all over other areas after. It may be a bladder issue or he may be spraying, more so if he is not fixed.

Try vinegar again after sprinkle with baking soda before and keep up after. My brother's cat will sometimes pee on the bathroom rug(right next to her box where its been the entire time he's had her) and I get the smell out using vinegar and baking soda in the wash. It may be still smelly because its the cushion material on the inside that isn't getting completely rinsed off with vinegar.

I've heard good things about some of the urine gone products.

Nature's Miracle sold at petsmart works awesome!

ITA with this one :thumbsup2:thumbsup2. One of our cats decided he wasn't going to poop in the litter box anymore. NO changes in schedule, routine, household occupants, etc. Vet says no blockages. He was just pooping (and sometimes peeing) someplace other than the litter box every third or fourth day. We tried everything- bigger box, moving food dishes to another location (until the poop pile in front of the dishes), scooping several times daily, not scooping for 2-3 days, etc. We finally followed a friend's advice. Litter boxes are in the same room with cat food and water anyhow, so when we feed them we close them in the room for a couple of hours. They HAVE to use the boxes. It sounds harsh, but it worked! (fingers crossed, knock on wood) No "accidents" for a week now.

Anyhow, Natures Miracle (just for cats formula) works like a charm. It's been 90+ degrees here for the past few days, and in Maine we don't have a/c. Can't smell old cat pee smell at all!

We had a cat. She couldn't be left alone as she was a spiteful cat if we were gone for a weekend even overnight.

She ruined our spare bed after a vacation, and with another vacation looming, the fact she would be hostile in a kennel or even at home with friends watching was too much.

She is now playing with mice up stairs in the sky...

A lot of people have given good advice about using products to get the urine out. I'd like to offer advice about a type of scoopable litter -- you can get it at Petsmart and it's called Cat Attract. We've used it with quite a bit of success.

Buy a new sofa. Seriously. The smell will never be gone. Cat pee is horrific.

It also may be the litter. We had some issues with ours and switched to an unscented litter you buy and can refill containers of at PETCO. They love it. I got a ton of tips from www.catinfo.org. All of Dr. Pierson's recommendations have worked in our house - but instead of the cutting into the storage container to create a litterbox, we just use the storage containers the way they are.

Definitely a petty thing for the poster who supposedly euthanized their cat over ruining their furniture. They aren't bugs, they are family members.

Also keep in mind that you must remove the smell completely to keep him from going in the same spot again. If he can smell it (and his nose is sharper than yours), he'll likely go there again.

well since you lack the facts, i'll break it down for you.....

Cat was 13 yo. still healthy, no medical conditions. Cat was extremely antisocial to anyone but me and my wife. She would literally trap family and friends who came to watch her, hissing at them, and making them fearful. Some friends stopped coming over to feed her if we left for a weekend. We never left her alone if it wasn't an overnight trip. we would always have someone come over to play or feed her instead of an automatic feeder.

The cat peed on our bed twice. I convinced the wife to forgive her after the first as she had been mistakenly trapped in our bedroom for a day ( I thought she was out of the room but she snuck back in before I closed the door).

The cat ruined a new furniture set (she was declawed), the spare bed after a week vacation (family member came every day to be with the cat to feed and change the litter).

another weeklong trip a few months later would have been disasterous to the remaining house. We tried to find a placement, but due to her aggressive nature, she wouldn't have been.

i even had a vet call me after my wife dropped her off, to come get the cat as they couldn't handle her. she got out of her cage and attacked anyone that got near. I had to leave work and drive across town to get her as I was the only one that could handle her in her fits. A VET!!!!!

so when our daughter was born shortly before and was starting to crawl.. the cat stopped being a family member and became a pet.

house and kids came before the cat, and as hard as it was to do, it had to be done.

sorry you feel the need to condemn me for uthenizing the cat, but it had to be done. Rather than dump her somewhere, I know she is in a better place, free from her kitty anger issues, and playing with her mice friends.

I don't feel guilt over the decision, just saddened that she wasn't able to be friendlier, as we'd have still had her if the antisocialness wasn't there.

Just for future reference - it is proven that if you declaw your cat that they usually develop anger issues - mainly because they cannot use their claws to warn others. Not to mention if you see the surgery done, you will never get it done again...Regardless, I don't think you should be commended for what you did. I just can't understand how anyone has an animal for 13 years and makes such a difficult decision with ease. All of my animals are here to stay until they die or are so close to death that they are suffering and need to be helped so that they die peacefully. Sure, they piss me off on regular occassions and yes, some are not very friendly to the vets but when I got them I committed to raising them their entire lives not part of them or until they weren't convenient anymore. As I have said before, you can't do that with kids, and animals should be no different. There are behaviorists, and other resources to help with difficult animals. No one will ever be euthanized before it is their time. I don't understand how having children somehow changes things for so many people and turns their animals from family members to pests.

Regardless, it sounds like the OP loves her cat even through this attitude issue and hopefully the smell gets out of her couch.

You would maintain that stance even if the animal was a threat to your child? Seriously? A vicious cat is no match for baby. Sorry.

My cat recently had some bladder problems too. I found arm and hammer carpet and upholstery spray works best. And the trick with any spray or cleaner to completely drench the area and make sure it soaks in everywhere the pee soaked in.
