Vanguard has low costs and their funds have very favorable expense ratios. I'd recommend avoiding any funds that charge sales loads. American Funds has some good offerings, but they are actively managed and the A shares will set you back 5% on the sales charge. And the expense ratios on the other share classes are obscene. Edward Jones typically recommends loaded funds as well. Check out E-Trade, TD Ameritrade, and Charles Schwab. I deal with the institutional divisions so I'm not up to speed on the retail offerings but I believe that Schwab and TDA have low or non-existent annual maintenance fees even for small accounts. Fees are very important when you are considering a small account. A $50 annual maintenance fee on a $4,000 account amounts to 1.3% of the account value. Another advantage to the fund supermarkets like Schwab, TD Ameritrade and Fidelity is that you have a very wide choice of no load mutual funds.
