Anyone in north Florida have great success with roses? Can you give me some pointers? Type of rose that's done well for you, dealing with black spot ,best exposure, etc.

Hi, :wave2:

I am in Austin Texas, but black spot is a big problem here as well. We learned inour master gardener class that the best thing for black spot is to buy roses that don't get it!!! :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: Also buy roses that do well in heat and make sure you give them good drainage - and that may mean putting them up on a small hill or in a raised bed. There are roses that have been tested by extension services called Earthkind roses. No black spot, no having to cut off the spent blooms, do well if you don't water them. Here are some web sites to learn about them and find them. http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/earthkindrose/
http://www.houstonrose.org/earthkin.htm - has a list of the best.

I have grown the rose called Belinda's Dream and recommended it to everyone. It is a gorgeous large pink shrub rose that flowers 10 months of the year, has a wonderful fragrance, and very few thorns. I planted it by my patio and love sitting there with a cup of coffe in themorning smelling the lovely fragrance. Another one not on the list that I think is better than the Knockout rose everyone was talking aobut this year is Playboy rose - another shrub rose, but a single. It is beautiful with dark green leaves and flowers all over the plant! :cheer2: It also flowers all year, not much scent, does ok if you have a little shade and has few thorns. I didn't have to spray either of them all summer for blackspot whereas I had to spray my David Austin roses all summer! And they have thorns!

by the way - all roses need full sun - and rose fertilizer! There are a few that can take a little shade, but they won't flower as well. And they need water except for the Earthkind roses that still need it when they are establishing themselves. another expectation is that the rose will just sit there the first year you plant it. The second year it will really take off, so be patient. :hourglass

There is actually a rose that does wonderful here. Many of the parks in the area have it as landscaping. It is called a "Knock Out" rose, it blooms most of the summer. The roses are not the type for cutting, but it has a massive amount of blooms. I have three around my mailbox, very low maintance.

Read this from the Univ. of Florida -

I have a few Knock-outs that do get black spot :confused3 I got them for an area that I really didn't want to spend a great deal of time on. As it turns out it's been a pain. They look naked part of the summer. The most resiliant for me have been Meidland roses. I have a few in different colors. They don't require pinching back spraying or anything. Very easy and very pretty. They spread whereas my Knock out is a climber. Here's a link with pics if Meidlands and other Carpet roses.

I have found that some of the David Austin English roses are very hardy also. Floribundas and Grandifloras.

Here's a pic on one my Knock-outs

The Knock Out Rose that I have is a dense, tidy shrub rose and resistant to black-spot. I have done nothing to them all summer and they are beautiful. They do have a scent, but it is not strong.

They are some planted at a local park and are quite large and covered with roses.

I found some pics of the Meidland rose bushes along our driveway. Very hardy disease resistant and no fuss.

I was mistaken when I said "Knock Out" didn't well here. It's very disease resistant. I was out watering the other day and remembered the red rose saga.
Long winded story time.
I have a few red roses that DH bought on the cheap as they say. Laughingly I nicknamed them "Knock Off". What I really wanted was "Knock Out" but he found these red bushes that looked like "Knock Out". He had no idea. I kept my mouth shut and planted them thankful that he bought me roses at all. That was 6 years ago when we first moved into this house. They turned out to be awful as I thought they would. Over the years I've planted the real "Knock Out" next to the "Knock Offs".Shhh don't tell. It's full and green and totally disease resistant growing right next to scraggly, naked awful "Knock Offs".
Moral of the story a red rose isn't always a Knock Out :rose:
