Hello! We took our 9th trip to WDW at the beginning of June 2013, and I am slowly working my way through reviews of our amazing meals (posting them as single reviews so it's easier to go right to what you're looking for -- although I'm still on the fence about whether this approach is more helpful or not!).

Anyway, we were, as usual, on DDxDP. I appreciate there's always a lot of debate about whether the dining plans are worth it, and about whether the deluxe plan is just too. much. food. My DH loves having the whole trip basically paid for ahead of time, and I think he really likes having all the ADRs so he knows we'll be sitting down to eat in primarily TS places (since he knows I'd have a tendency to skip meals or to invite him and our DS 15) to have light, "snacky," on-the-go meals. I appreciate having the plan because I certainly do have the tendency to order the less expensive option(s) on a menu rather than the thing that really catches my eye, and I guess sitting down and stopping to eat isn't the worst thing to do on vacation :thumbsup2

SO -- we arrived at WDW on June 7, 2013 and checked in to BC at about noon. We love BC/YC for many reasons, but the key is that nice short walk to Epcot, where we tend to end up at one time or another on nearly every day of our trips. Originally our plan had been to hit the fish & chip stand in England (I really don't like to make a lunch ADR on arrival day, just in case anything during the travel from Boston to Orlando delays us), but we knew it would be brutally hot and humid, we knew we'd need some time to adjust, we figured afternoon rain was something to consider so the idea of a meal indoors became pretty appealing. We'd actually never tried Rose & Crown and figured we were overdue, so we made an ADR for 1:30 and had no problem getting there on time.

We were given a pager and barely had time to wander into the shops across the way when it went off. And, wouldn't you know it, after all our considerations of eating TS instead of CS, the CM starts leading us to a table outdoors! My DH paused at the table she was giving us and said, "I know you're very busy this afternoon, and that I should have said something when we checked in, but I wondered if, please, there is any way we could get a table inside? We'd be willing to wait longer." The CM went back up to the podium, found us a table inside, and we thanked her profusely. She was very nice and she said to my DH, "my pleasure -- and it really helped that you said 'please.'" It really seemed like she meant it; I probably say this in every review I write, but I really cannot stress enough how meaningful it is to be kind and polite to CMs. They do seem to get treated harshly by many guests and a little kindness goes a long way.

And on to the food!!

For starters, I had:

Frisee and Apple Salad - with blue cheese crumbles, candied nuts and cranberry vinaigrette. This was just what I was hoping for -- cold, crisp, light, but very flavorful. The only challenge was that it was a little tricky to eat; the small plate made it hard to cut smaller pieces of the endive and to get a little bit of everything onto the fork. But, that probably slowed me down in a way that was good! I would definitely order this again.

DH went with:

Roasted Sea Scallops - with baby spinach, tomato and olive vinaigrette. He does love scallops and these were tender, tasty, and fresh.

DS tried:

Trio of United Kingdom Cheese - with accompaniments. If he doesn't order a caesar salad, he usually has a cheese plate! There wasn't a card with information about the selections, but the CM ran through these for him (but of course that didn't give me a chance to get the details down!). He enjoyed both the cheeses and the special accompaniments -- pretty much every place at WDW seems to do a really good job with these pairings.

DS was a little disappointed that we had made this ADR (especially on the first day, he really likes to be having park time and not sit-down-and-eat time) but he was mollified when he heard that he could still get fish and chips, which is what he and I both ordered:

I believe there has been some discussion here recently that the order used to come with two pieces of fish instead of one, but we both found the serving size to be perfect. Oh my -- crisp, perfectly fried fish, fantastic tartar sauce, a ton of fries -- what's not to love? We were very happy and very quiet as we worked away on our plates. And I loved that the waxed paper that they sit on is printed to look like newsprint (WDW seems to be losing too many of these little details lately, so it was nice to see it here).

DH wanted something light, so he ordered:

Farmhouse Ploughman's Lunch - carved ham, cheese, roast chicken, egg, and traditional English accompaniments. I would say that what was put in front of him was exactly what was described on the menu, but for some reason he said he was picturing something different. He said there was absolutely nothing wrong with the dish, but that it wasn't quite the flavors he was expecting. (Sometimes when food is served very cold -- as was the case here -- it can dull the flavors; I'm not sure if that was his issue.) I think a lot of it had to do with our gorgeous the plates of fish & chips were that were sitting around him on the table; he said he'd wished he'd gone along with us and that he'd definitely go fish & chips next time.

Nothing on the dessert menu really appealed to us, and by this point DS was definitely itching to get out into Epcot! Rose & Crown was much smaller inside than I was picturing -- but the service was lovely and it was nice to eat lunch inside with AC. I would try this place again; I could see sitting out in the patio in cooler weather and maybe going at dinner so that we could have a pint (rather than iced tea -- although that was certainly tasty and right for the middle of the day!).

Thanks for the great review. We have been dining at R&C for years and for the most part have always enjoyed our meals.

I only recently realized there was an actual restaurant and not just the pub in England! I think this will be on our list of ADRs, as none of us have ever eaten here. Thanks for the review!

Excellent choices! Keep the reviews coming! The scallops look great as does the cheese platter. Yum!

ok wait. They changed the serving size from 2 pieces to 1 piece? Is this at both locations? Is the one piece bigger?

I don't see how they can serve you 1 piece of fried fish for $16.99?

I just know that I've read complaints here from others about the change in the serving size; this was our first time at this restaurant. We have eaten fish & chips from the CS location (Yorkshire County Fish Shop) but it was several years ago, and I'd have to go back through my old photos to check the portion size. My photo was taken before we touched our plates, so what you see is what you get.

I will say that food prices overall at WDW have continued going up, and there *seems* to be some truth to the complaints that the dining plans are partly to blame (although I don't claim to be in the know on the bean-counting!). I will say that we as a family are guilty in terms of being on the dining plan and not even looking at nor thinking about the prices and the relative value (or not) of the food....

We Love, Love, Love R&C. We can't NOT eat there. We've only eaten dinner. At dinner, they may have 2 pieces of fish, not sure, but pretty sure DH had 2. I love the cheese sampler and the ale flight is good, as well. We've tried lots there, the cottage/shepherds pie...awesome and the scotch egg - YUM! Don't think we'll ever take this off our list!

Reason I ask is because CS location usually gives you 2 pieces of fish. This place is a MUST DO for my very big teens and 1 piece of fish would not work, even for $8.99!

Lots of things have changed at Disney and I make it work but if this is true, it will make me :crazy2:

OP if that picture is what you got for $16.99 I would be :crazy2: :crazy2: It must have been a mistake!

Two of us ordered the fish & chips, and both of us got one piece of fish, so I really don't think it was a mistake. Again, I know that others on these boards have complained about that recently (one piece of fish instead of two), but it wasn't an issue for us because it was plenty of food....

Wonderful review !! Growing up in England I remember when Fish and Chips were wrapped in REAL newspaper , don't ask why but I swear it tasted better !!! During WW11 people brought there own newspaper as there was a shortage !!! A ploughmans lunch is typically a think piece of bread with cheese and a slice of meat and probably a pickled onion !!But their are many variations !!

I love this memory you've shared!

We ate fish and chips at the counter service in England (Yorkshire County Fish Shop) on Monday and got 2 pieces of fish and lots of fries for $8.99. My friend and I shared. It was really hot and delicious and I'm not a big fish eater.

Thanks for the info -- so that's the route to go for those who are looking for a bigger portion for less $$!

Exactly. At the time we were just looking for a quick bite so the counter service worked, especially because I wasn't sure that I'd like the fish.. After reading your review I wouldn't hesitate to get an ADR and experience the atmosphere of the restaurant. Thank you so much for your reviews!

I think the dining plan has caused price increases in the sense that it has increased demand. More people buy the dining plan, more people eat on property. Even people that don't buy the plan eat on property more because of the attention all the restaurants get from people on the plan. It is just a different park guest than it was 20 to 30 years ago.

Other things have caused increased demand too, such as traffic and magical express, etc. Disney has made it really nice to never leave property and as a result the demand for restaurants has increased. They do booming business at almost every single eatery during meal times. When demand exceeds supply like that (and there is no competition) prices go up.

At least that is my take.:cool1:

Great review. I am not a fish fan and your husband's plate doesn't look too impressive. Was there anything else on the menu worth a try? Or is this pretty much a fish place.

People at the table next to us were having the cottage pie and loving it, and if I hadn't been in a fish & chips mood I would have ordered the bangers and mash. I'd say there's a pretty nice selection of things to choose from....
