On Mother's Day my family had dinner at R&C. Although this is a longtime family favorite it probably wouldn't have been my first choice but four of us just landed around 3:30. With a problem with our BCV room assignment, it's good we didn't plan something further afield.
We arrived a few minutes early for our 7:20 reservation and asked for outside. We received a pager and waited just a few minutes for it to go off. We could have waited another 40 minutes for an outside table but everyone was tired so we took the inside one that was available. It was up against one of the windows and we had a wonderful view of the globe during Illuminations. It actually was great to just focus on that for a change.
The bad news was that the end seats on the table are extremely uncomfortable. There is about 3-4 inches of space for your legs. I have to think that my children have had those seats at times over the years and just never complained. It was really the pits. My DIL and I had them this time and ate our dinners sitting "sidesaddle."
The good news was that our server was Kyle and he did a fine job. The servers in R&C have been nearly uniformly delightful over the years and he was no exception.
For appetizers, four of us chose the fruit & cheese plate. This has been a mainstay on the R&C menu since Epcot opened but the latest reincarnation of it is our least favorite by far. No more strawberries, no more Stilton cheese although there was a little bit wrapped in phyllo dough (or something like that), no more 5 English cheeses. Instead the cheeses were forgettable....which I've done. I'm almost positive one was Brie....not exactly English! It also seems to have become ubiquitous as it was on every cheese sampler we had this trip. There was a little bit of jelly which I would have normally left untouched but needed something to liven the taste.
Our son had the potato leek soup which he enjoyed very much. Our DIL had a salad with Stilton dressing. It looked good.
She chose the Vegetable potpie for dinner which she said was very good. DS1 had the 6 hour shank which he said was good. DS2 and I had Fish & Chips with mashed potatoes instead of chips. For some years now, R&C's fish often seemed soggy but tasty (not true in the early years when it was just great). THis time it was crisp on the outside but seemd not quite done on the inside. Not the type of fish that is best served that way.
My husband and our DD had fillets. She didn't say anything and having just returned from college any steak probably tasted great. But my DH said his was tough.
For dessert, DS1 had a fruit scone which he enjoyed. Two had the Aplle Crumble which was good and one had just plain vanilla ice cream. DIL and I had the Guiness Torte. I couldn't taste the Guiness at all but it was good.
Two in our family still miss the prime rib and Yorkshire pudding which certainly seems more typical of Britain than steak. With the changes in the fruit and cheese plate, it will probably be a while before we give R&C another try. But they hardly need our business as it is always bustling.
