Rope Drop Question

I should know this but I don't - sorry for the basic question:
If it is not an EE/MM day at Disneyland, how far in advance of the official park opening do they open the gates? Say for an 8:00 am opening, what time do I need to get there if I want to be near the actual rope at the end of Main Street for rope drop?

We went to DL on a Monday in early June and there was no MM or EMH on that day. Regular park opening was 8:00 am and they opened the turnstiles at 7:40 am. There was a rope drop at the entrance to each individual land...so there was a rope at Tomorrowland, Adventureland, etc.

to have your fingers on the rope you need to be at the gate at 7:15. The narrow opening on main street will quickly back folks up, that by the time rope drop happens, 3/4 of the street could very well be full.

DL does not always open turnstiles early especially for the 8AM opening times. On some days there is no actual rope and the term "rope drop" is used to mean when the turnstiles open to allow guests into the park. Whether they do or do not allow guests in early, your question is really how early arrive to be near the front of the queue at the turnstiles. If they open turnstiles early and use a rope then you will be able to get to the front of the rope, and if they do not you will be at the front of the turnstile.

With that said, I agree with the PP that 7:15 or maybe 7:20 should get you at the front of the turnstile or near it.
