Heading to WDW at the end of July. Didn't make our dining and FP+ reservations until a week ago. Got everything we wanted. Now I'm trying to mentally prepare for what life in the FP+ era will be like. A big wild card/question for me is.......what is Rope Drop like in the parks now that FP+ is in full swing?

I know the days of getting a few attractions in before the lines get too long are gone, but can you still take advantage of Rope Drop to get one headliner in? For instance, at EPCOT we did FP+ for TT, and would like to hit Soaring at opening. Since we hop, we haven't scheduled AK FP+ (saving them for the afternoon park) and are hoping to hit Everest at opening. Stuff like that.

Anywho.....please relate your Rope Drop experiences here. Which park were you in, were you there right at drop, which ride did you go to, how long was the wait? Being there at Rope Drop, has anyone gotten more than one ride in before the lines were prohibitive?

Thanks for your feedback!

We went in January and took advantage of of EMH at AK, but weren't there for rope drop but managed to get on Expedition Everest and the safaris all within about 15 minutes including the walk between the two. I would say FP+ Just allows people another chance to get on popular rides while taking advantage of rope drop and or EMH.

I grew up along the Hudson valley..it's a small world after all.

Epcot Rd was a big bust over Easter Soarin' then single ride line at TT which is now much longer then ever. 25 minutes at opening. Over at Maelstrom, which be a walk on f you got there at 11AM but the FP+ line was steady so the SB moved but not as steadily. So we skipped RD yesterday

Earlier this week we had AK morning FP+'s set up so it was SB for Safari but again even if you were in the first rush to the ride the line stopped and all the FP+ people walked past steadily. We were in the first 50 people into he park and the line to Safari stopped before the stroller parking. Never has that line stopped in my experience being one of the first families in, ever.

After that it was walk to the next attraction, wait for FP, after our three FP's were done the only thing left mid-afternoon was Tough to be a bug which we did then left.

At DHS now for RD I'll let you know how it goes.

If you are going for headliners, you will get one maybe 2 rides in before the lines build too much. It really depends on the crowds and the park. At MK the waits for BTMR & Splash was still 15 or less up to around 9:45 to 10:00 But in the parks with less headliners to pick from, the SB lines built much more quickly. In Epcot, we wouldn't have been able to do both Soarin' and TT at RD without a long wait for one of them. But we did RD TT and FP+ Soarin' and did both with short waits. For our RDs we got to the park about 45 minutes to an hour early.

We were there May 30-June 5, we RD MK on non-EMH days and except for A&E and SDWR there was only a small 5 minute wait on rides for the first 20 minutes and then rides like Peter Pan and ETWB started going up but everything else was good for the first hour to hour half. Epcot was a fail for us, we walked to get in line for TT and it said 60 minutes but I though no and wanted to get in line but was vetoed by the rest of our group, there was 10 of us. The day we RD AK we had very little wait for probably the first two hours. Then one day we RD on a EMH at AK and the same, very little wait for the first two hours. We just did a half day at HS on an evening EMH. Let me add we followed the plans from easywdw and went to the recommended park that day, expect days we did early EMH at a park and then we left at noon.

We were there last week and did rope drop all but one day. We followed Josh's cheat sheets at easywdw and had great success.
At AK we varied a little because we had a breakfast ADR at Tusker at 10:30, so we stayed in Africa, took a break and came back to do Dinoland and Asia. We didn't wait more than 5, maybe 10 min for anything and really didn't need our FP+ at all.
At Epcot, we followed his day one plan when we did TT and then his late arrival plan when we did soarin' and both worked really well, we again didn't experience much of a wait at any ride and his advice on how to use FP+ worked very well.
At MK, we used his ideal 2 day plans and we didn't wait more than 15 min for any ride, most things were a walk on in the first hour and a half. And after that, we had FP+ for rides that have a long wait (PP, etc) Most people were headed to Anna and Elsa or 7DMT, so tomorrowland and adventureland/frontierland were almost empty at RD. On our 3rd day, my DH and DS rode BTMRR 10 times, 5 in the am and 5 in the pm, only once with a FP+, that we didn't really need when we used it!
We also did PM emh at MK on our last day. We did RD, then left the park after our 11:35 lunch FP at BoG and returned around 8 pm. We rode everything we wanted, even Anna and Elsa were down to a 20 min wait. Mine train still had a 55 min posted wait, but we had rode it with a FP+ earlier, so that was fine with us.
It was my DH and DS's first trip and DH kept commenting on how he couldn't believe that we never really waited for anything. Yes, it took some planning, but it was worth every ounce of energy and time that planning took! We also followed Josh's advice on recommended parks, except for the last day, he never recommends the emh park, but we did fine doing RD and taking a long break with naps. Sorry this is so lengthy! Hope this helps ease your mind!

I forgot DHS, we did RD, went to sign up for Jedi Training, only the 1st show was filled, so we chose the 11:50. TSMM was already at 40 min by the time we got there, so we did GMR and came back for our FP+ at TSMM. We waited about 10 min to meet Woody and Buzz, had a snack at starting rolls, DS did JTA (which was awesome!!) used FP+ on Star Tours and ToT, had lunch at Sci Fi, then backlot, lights, motor, action, muppets, and other shows in the afternoon. Since we didn't take a break and were doing RD the next day, we left around 7, but felt like we did everything we wanted to do! And we didn't wait more than the time it took for a new show to start at any of the attractions!

I don't think the RD advantage is gone at all. I was there Saturday May 31 and I was able to do TSMM, RnR, ToT, and Star Tours all before 9, and were at Epcot by 9:30. Even arriving 30 minutes after RD at Epcot we did TT in about 10 minutes as Single Riders. We had FP for Soarin' and MS. Also rode Maelstrom and Sum of all Thrills and did the character spot all by 11:30. Our last FP was for Spaceship Earth, but we skipped it because there was a huge line to get INTO the FP line.

I would imagine MK is even better at RD if you avoid 7DMT and A&E.

1st hour, MK day 2:
Ariel's Undersea Adventure

1st hour, Epcot:
Test Track
Sum of All Thrills
Soaring (w/ FP)

1st hour, DHS:
RnR
Star Tours
Star Tours

The end of July will be somewhat busier due to school being out, but not by much.

Bottom line is, RD still benefits, because FP or no FP, there is a HUGE contingent of guests that take awhile to get up, get breakfast, and get to the parks. 1130 still sees hordes of guests coming through the gates.

All RD's this week started with the park opening 10 minutes early

We were the third family in line. If your MB did not work they waved them through. We got on TSMM immediately, when we got off at 9:06 at the line was out the door with a 65 minute wait. We wandered around an empty park and took pictures. Went to Star Tour said 10 minutes but it was less. Loved it rode it again walked on both times. Used our TSMM FP+ the Kiosks did not list it as "available" and this was before 10 AM. I never remember FP gone before 10 ever. It may have been gone before the park even opened so that is a huge change.

When we went over to use our FP+ for Star Tours the FP+ line was now longer than walking on earlier.

I'll let you know after lunch and TT if there is such a thing as as a fourth FP+

Last June on our trip TSMM and Soarin were always gone within an hour of park opening. So I don't see an issue there. Also there was sometimes a 15 min wait to get TSMM fast passes, which is now not an issue as long as you pre-book!

We went to WDW from June 4 (Wed) to June 9, and rope drop has definitely changed a bit. (caveat: when I say "changed," I mean since the last time we went, which was about six years ago, so higher crowds overall may play a part)

But, they aren't so bad that you can't get multiple rides in before lines get prohibitive. In every one of the parks, we managed to get a handful of rides in each morning, with no waits over 10 minutes. By about 11am, lines started to get pretty hairy for most attractions, 40mins+, and at that point we started using our FP+ selections interspersed with less popular rides. Aside from one day (Epcot) we always left the park by 1-2pm, and returned in the evening.

The crowds were kinda nuts, and much worse than I remembered, but they were completely manageable, with very few exceptions. The exceptions, for us, would be the biggest of the headliners. We had bad luck at rope drop with those, and I think maybe they're no longer a good call first thing in the morning--everyone is heading over there. A couple of examples:

(1) On our Hollywood Studios day, we had an 8:15 Star Wars breakfast at the SciFi. We finished up right around 9am and headed out to hit the first ride. Because we had used our Tier 1 FP+ for TSMM, we headed to RNRR--thinking we would knock it out first. We got to that area of the park at about 5-10 minutes after 9am, and it was a complete no-go. The line for RNRR was winding out of the RNRR area, past ToT, past a half block of shops--nearly all the way to the Planet Hollywood Store.

Now, in retrospect, I think that the ride must have been shut down, or maybe it doesn't open up and let the line move until a few more minutes after park opening, but on that day we took one look and just turned around. But--and this is the important part--we just went to ride other things. Though we didn't have a FP+ scheduled until after 11am, we were able to ride the GMR, Star Tours, and a couple others with almost no waits. Not our original plan, but it was fine. We knocked out our FP+ reservations before lunch, took a break, then came back at night. And, after Fantasmic, we walked straight on RNRR.

(2) On our Magic Kingdom day (a Sunday, when it was the MOST unrecommended park and the highest crowds were projected), we were a little less lucky, but still surprised overall. We started with a Crystal Palace breakfast at 8:05 (see a pattern here?), and were aiming to get out by 8:45 to go line up at the castle rope. Having that early of a reservation, it's not difficult, and there's no need to rush. Our goal was the 7DMT, for which we didn't have a FP+. (We'd already ridden it once on our arrival night, courtesy of FP+, but everyone was really jazzed to ride it again--such a great ride).

Well, nothing went according to plan. The park opened early, and we didn't beat the crowds, so by the time we hit Mine Train, the posted wait time was over 90 minutes. Now, here's the deal, though--it was closed, and that may have been why the line was so long. People were willing to line up and wait indefinitely (which is bad for them, because that ride stayed closed for the majority of the day, as far as I could tell--we never saw it open).

But, as with the Studios, we just rearranged our plan. We hit Peter Pan with no wait, then Haunted Mansion in less than 10 minutes, then walked down to BTMRR. Shockingly, it was now almost 10am, and the waits on BTMRR and Splash were both under 20 minutes. Splash was posted as 5 minutes, BTMRR was posted as 15. We did Splash first, but by the time we got out, BTMRR was posted at 30. We had a FP+ for later, anyway, so we skipped it (20 minute lines are pretty much our threshold). Instead, we walked over to Pirates and found a 15 minute queue--at ~10:30am.

So, the moral of the story is, yep, rope drop is crazier than it used to be. And some rides are just a really bad idea at that time of day, in my experience. But, rope drop is not dead, at least not for us. We enjoy our afternoon breaks, and flexibility allows for plenty to do, regardless of where everyone else chooses to line up. And those rides that should be avoided at rope drop? FP+ them or catch them late at night (late nights are still great in the parks, as far as I can tell). Even Mine Train would have probably been attainable in under 20 minutes if we'd gone back to the park that night (and the ride was open), but it was the end of our week, and we were too worn out to make it till 2am.

Sorry if that's too much detail.

Josh at easywdw.com has videos. Speaks volumes.

REAL rope drop made a big difference for us at MK (but we weren't going to Fantasyland - we had a FP for the mine train and PP later) - we went to splash and BTMRR - walked onto both.

REAL rope drop worked well for us at HS - but we weren't signing up for Jedi Training and we had fp for TSMM so we went straight to RnR.

EPCOT we were there for rope drop but further back than I'd like and that's always an issue b/c only 2 choices for RD there... Not sure that's a FP thing though - maybe a bit - b/c some people get 9:00 FPs

AK we only did arrival afternoon so can't speak to that

I'm still a believer in a good rope drop - especially a wise one at MK
