If upgrades are asked for and given freely by the front desk without the requirement of contacting MS and without charging extra points, it wouldn't be fair the rest of the membership. It's one thing if you are given an upgrade because your unit had to be taken out of service for some reason, but that also works the other way too.

When I got that upgrade I spoke about earlier (and they ended up separating us by three floors when we requested to have the rooms as close together as possible) the "upgrade" may have been Disney-speak for "Um, there was a problem with the original room we had assigned you."

I hadn't thought of that. But it does make sense. Why else would they upgrade on the DVC side when points had already been allocated out and they have lots of people waiting for those rooms. Especially in our case since we were there for the week that included New Year's Eve.
