Room Upgrades

If upgrades are asked for and given freely by the front desk without the requirement of contacting MS and without charging extra points, it wouldn't be fair the rest of the membership. It's one thing if you are given an upgrade because your unit had to be taken out of service for some reason, but that also works the other way too.

AAAhhhhhhh . . . the light bulb comes on!

When I got that upgrade I spoke about earlier (and they ended up separating us by three floors when we requested to have the rooms as close together as possible) the "upgrade" may have been Disney-speak for "Um, there was a problem with the original room we had assigned you." :tinker:

I hadn't thought of that. But it does make sense. Why else would they upgrade on the DVC side when points had already been allocated out and they have lots of people waiting for those rooms. Especially in our case since we were there for the week that included New Year's Eve.

I don't understand why it would be impolite and unreasonable to ask for an upgrade? Expecting one is a different matter - but the travel industry provides upgrades all the time, and often when asked. I've been upgraded at Disney by surprise and by asking politely. In both cases, I had every expectation of staying in the accommodations I booked, but it was still a nice plus.

Point taken that DVC upgrades would be very rare - but if they do happen (and apparently they do given the other posts to this thread), why not ask? As someone else posted, the worst that can happen is that they can say, "Sure, do you have 20 more points?"

I think we're really saying the same thing in different ways. Politely asking if it's possible and pushing for it are two totally different things and the latter is really more what I was referring to, not so much asking nicely, but expecting it.

It isn't as applicable to DVC as it is at some resorts but I have seen a number of threads about Marriott, esp Maui, where owners expected an upgrade to a better unit type than they owned and were upset they didn't get it and and exchanger did. Marriott is reluctant to give upgrades in this manner because it can affect their ability to sell the higher cost unit types. It is applicable to DVC. If you could reserve a studio and get a 1 BR a fair amount of time why would you buy enough points for a 1 BR.

Sure you can politely ask and at DVC resorts they will politely say No, to free upgrades.

As to whether upgrades happen at DVC resorts, of course they do. Most are due to a problem with the room, maintenance issue or housekeeping, or overbooking of a category, which is rare with DVC but does happen sometimes.

Thanks for the clarification - and totally agree.

Now, I understand how extremely rare this is but last September we booked a standard studio at BWV and when I went to check in the CM said that we had been upgraded to a 1bd pool view. I was completely shocked and excited!! Not bad for 8 points a night!!:thumbsup2

Maybe it was special for the "Year of a Million Dreams"!

We were upgraded from a Preferred view studio to Boardwalk view studio last month. The upgrade was fairly typical of those I usually get at other non-WDW hotels: we were only there for one night and were checking in late (aft Midnight).

We actually were hoping for a downgrade to a standard view so we wouldn't have to move for our next 9 nights. No such luck, but the move was fairly painless with us checking out after 10 am and having our new room ready by about 2 pm.
