I am paying 254.00 per night at the Poly (room only rate with code) arriving 9/22/07 for 6 nights. I had to pay 285.75 deposit for the 1st night.

How do they arrive at that figure?

254.00 plus....?

Thanks

Pat :)

The tax rate is 12.5 % so 254 x 12.5 % = 31.75

254.00
31.75= 285.75 per night 6 night total = 1714.50

12.5%? Huh? Sales tax in that area is 6.5%.

You have sales tax plus a room tax. I think that some of the Pop resorts are arounf 13.5% total tax because they are in a different county than the other resorts.

Most hotels have an additional room tax on top of the regular sales tax. This is an easy way for local government to increase revenues since the people most likely to complain about this tax can't vote for you anyway. I think that a lot of things related to the tourist industry have additional taxes/fees added to them over and above the regular sale tax.

I always try to figure out what "room tax" is when you already paid tax:confused3

Hey where in Central Jersey are you guys from?:confused3 I am from Toms River

And us locals really appreciate your donations to our tax base.

Room tax and sales tax are usually two different things. I believe that all hotels and resorts charge a room tax. At least, all the hotels I've stayed in, in many cities around the US and Canada, have charged a room tax. 12.5% is actually about average, based on my own experiences. :)

I LOVE Toms River  I used to live there until I moved to MA 10 years ago. I still have family there and I was just there last weekend! :sunny: Gotta love the Jersey Shore! :thumbsup2

Ok, to keep this post on topic, I just checked my reservation for the Hilton in Boston for next weekend and they're showing a 12.45% "taxes and charges" fee, added on to the nightly rate. So the 12.5% that Disney charges is in line with that.

No taxes of ANY kind at Shades of Green, :) Not at any military run lodging.

Did you know Bon Jovi? He grew up in Sayreville.

Yes I did know him. :) We went to the same high school, I was a year ahead of him. I knew him basically through the marching band because I was a color guard, so all of us kids in the band and band front pretty much all knew each other. He was a very nice kid, and he was cute, always had his bangs in his eyes. lol But he did not stand out from any other kid; I mean, nobody including him knew back then that he'd be a world famous rock star. He's in my yearbook, and I keep it handy because when people hear that I went to high school with him, they want to see his pictures. lol

Yeah well that's a different situation. That's not a hotel that is open to the public, and it's priced differently. I know they charge according to what level/rank in the military you are.

DDDISRUNNER and SeaSpray,

I grew up in Matawan, have lived in Old Bridge for the past 28 years, about 3 miles from where I grew up!

I currently work in Spring Lake, but worked in Toms River (on route 37, near Mule Road) for a few years in the early 1990's.

I have alot of friends in Toms River. It is such a small world!

Pat :)

Tourism is FL's #1 business. The government just wants a piece of that pie, so hotel taxes are higher.

It really IS a small world! I had an aunt and uncle and cousins in Mattawan and went there all the time as a kid, and since Old Bridge is just a stone's throw from where I grew up in Sayreville, I know that town well, too. My first real job was at the Madison Theater on Route 9, on the spot that is now one of the jug handles of the Route 9 and Ernston Road intersection. This was back in the late 70's. LOL My brother was an OB police officer for many years and just retired last year. :)

There is a 6% Tourism Development Tax, that goes for tourism advertising and other tourist related projects. That is in addition to the 6.5 or 7% state/county sales tax that you will pay, depending on what county your hotel is in. There are very strict laws in place that control how the tourist tax can be spent (and believe me, there are plenty of people wanting to get a piece of the pie). There has been talk about using a portion of the tax to beef up security in areas like I-Drive, but since the tax wasn't set up to do that, they're having to go through a lot of red tape. You will pay the tourism tax on any short term rental of less than 7 months. When we were having our house built, we leased a condo for 7 months with a subsequent month to month option in the lease, just because of the tourism tax (turned out we were in it a year and a half anyway . . . ).
