Room service to take off ship

I have read that people order room service to take off the ship with them while at port. This sounds like a great idea to me! How early do you order the food to take with you if you are getting off in the morning? Does room service pack it in "to go" boxes if you ask? Thanks for the help!

I don't know about boxes - we brought along our own zip lock bags and a collapsible cooler (sized to hold a 6 pack of pop). We packed up food from room service as well as the buffet. Thinking back, we were able to pack sandwiches and fruit from the deck party buffet for use the next day at St. Thomas (stored in the fridge overnight). Very convenient! We also brought a 12 pack of pop to pack for excursions.

If I remember correctly the menu said we are not to take food off the ship. So they are unlikely to pack it up for you. If I were you I would order the night before and bring my own zip-locks.

How did you get the food from the buffet? Did you have to sneak it like the "little 'ol ladies" do with the ketchup at fast food places? Or can you get a plate and then take it back to your cabin to "eat"?

You cannot bring certain food items, such as fruit, back to the U.S. with you, but we have had no problems bringing food off the ship while in port. We did it on our 7-day cruise to eat on the way to a shore excursion and it worked out really well. The only thing that was kind of messy about it was that we ordered from Lumiere's, and they didn't want to do it because they are set up for sit-down food, not take-out. We brought our own utensils and stuff from the buffet, and they finally agreed to give us food.

As CarolAnnK indicated, no sneaking required. You will see people with paper plates and food - for example pizza from Pluto's - and china plates from Topsiders - being carried around quite freely. We made up a couple plates of food, returned to the cabin with the plates and bagged the items to go for excursions!

Obviously be careful with the food you choose to take with you on excursions - watch for mayonaise, etc - and take into consideration your ability to keep your foods cold if necessary. Hence the collapsible cooler - we used the zip lock bags for ice too to help keep food chilled in the portable small cooler we took with us on the excursions - thoroughly iced cans of pop will also work to keep items chilled.

This is a bit of a side comment, but we brought food down to the room from Topsider's a couple of times. I actually preferred this to room service for breakfast.

A couple of times on our cruise, while my wife was in the shower, I would throw on some clothes, walk up to Topsider's and fill up a tray with enough stuff for both of us. This only took about 5 minutes, and Topsider's has a better selection than room service for breakfast. We did room service for breakfast a time or two, but I found that taking the short trip to Topsider's was better.

Is it true that it states on the menu that you are not to take food off the ship?

Is it one of those things that if you ask your server or a CM, they would say it doesn't really matter?
