Room Safe

Ok Cruise veterans! Are there room safes and how trustworthy are they. I'm not gonna leave say a million bucks in it but sometimes the camcorder gets cumbersome and I would like to lock it up.

The Security staff onboard has means to enter the safes if need be, but that's it. Just keep in mind that nothing is foolproof, but safes, like locks in general, "keep honest people honest".

Every room has a room safe, but it is relatively small.

Plenty of room for wallet, cash, jewelry. But a camcorder is most likely pushing it. That's only going to fit if its one of the new pocket size cameras and/or that's the only thing you want in the safe.

I'm sure you spend a lot of money for that camcorder (ours cost $900 last year); but I had no qualms about leaving the camera in a camera bag and storing it in the cabinets over the TV.

I won't say that nothing ever gets stolen from inside cabins; but, I have yet to hear from anyone either on board the ship or on these boards saying they have had a problem with cameras or computers being stolen from cabins (i.e. if it happens, it's a rare event).

Also, the safes are not that big to where it would accomodate a camcorder unless they've made them, let's say, the size of a camera.....it will hold your personal valuables such as wallet, jewelry, keys, cell phone, etc...and the KTTW card that is used to lock it will be the one needed to unlock it, so, if you lock it with your card anyone else in party/room will not be able to unlock it with their card.....hopes this helps.....Andy

Safe's are located inside the closet.

I would venture a guess that the inside storage space is about 6" wide, 3" tall, and about 4" deep.

While you can't lock your suitcases on the airlines anymore, we certainly pack those suitcase locks and routinely lock goodies exactly like this in them when we go out.

A lock does keep an honest person honest!

You actually do not need to use your key to the world card to lock the safe. Any card with a magetic strip can do the trick. Remember, the card that lock the safe is the only one that can unlock it.

Others have suggested using a debit card or another card with the strip, and then leaving that card "hidden" in the room somewhere so that your entire party can have access to the safe even if everyone is not there. - That has to be a personal choice if you are willing to leave the card in the room. We have not done this and probably never will.

The safes are small but not tiny. I put my mini-notebook computer (7.5 x 10 x 1.5) and a SLR camera in there, along with wallets, etc.

If you have a mini-DV camcorder it should easily fit.

The safe is a good place for some stuff but I never felt fearful about leaving some of stuff out. I would put it away though usually in one of our suitcases. Be safe but don't fret over it.

Moneypit85..........we've been on 3 DCL cruises and NEVER had a ploblem. I was told by a CM the the hiring process IS extremely rough. Background checks, fingerprinting checks etc. If you are worried about the camcorder (it won't fit in the safe) large suitcases fit under the beds. Put it in a suitcase and slide the suitcase under the bed. JMHO.......I left my rolex on top of the dresser by accident on last weeks Magic cruise when I got back after breakfast our rooms were made up and my watch was where I left it. Dont Worry!!!

I also went out on an excursion for half the day and forgot I left a some cash on the dresser...wasn't a giant sum but it was 250.00 and it was right where I left it upon our return and the room was done too.

As others have suggested, the safes are much larger than they might appear. We put two fanny packs and our camera in there a couple of times. It would have easily accomodated my laptop computer, as I recall.

Just some additional thoughts on what should and what does not need to go in your safe.

Your cabin steward is unlikely to steal anything from your cabin because they would be first on the list of suspects. Disney would quickly see the pattern if items keep getting reported as missing from rooms cleaned by the same person.

The only other people who are likely to steal from you are other Disney employees, other passengers, and your roommates.

Other Disney employees and other passengers wouldn't risk entering rooms hoping to find things worth stealing. It would only be worth the risk if they know ahead of times that you have something in your cabin worth stealing. Keeping in mind that your cabin stewart props the cabin door open while they work on the cabin, if you keep valuables out of site, only your cabin steward and roommates will know what valuables are in your cabin.

The other way someone might be able to steal from your cabin would be if they entered your cabin while the steward had the door propted open. This would usually be because someone (employee or MAYBE another passenger) needed to ask the steward a question. Now in that situation, I could see where an unscrupulous individual might steal a small and valuable item they happen to come accross sitting out while the stewart's back in turned, but if they tried to pick up a camera or computer sitting out, the item is too large to risk going unnoticed by the cabin steward.

The last way someone might be able to steal from your cabin would be a maintainence worker that enters your cabin for repair work. While in your cabin, they might deside to look around and see if you have anything worth stealing. But if they tried to lift a camera or computer, they run a big risk of someone seeing them when they leave (and obviously it would NEVER look good for a Disney employee to ever leave a cabin holding a camera or lap-top computer. They could only risk taking something small they could easily hide in a pocket. And even then, if they were entering your cabin for legitimate perposes to begin with, once again, they become prime suspects if anything does turn up missing.

So in my opionion, it comes down to small valuable items should be kept in the safe to keep from someone pocketing the valuable should they somehow happen upon it. All other larger items are unlikely to be stolen if you just keep them out of sight so that no one has a reason to formulate a plan for swiping a large item from your cabin.

Last week my mom left her diamond ring in her room when they left the ship, my father had bought her a new diamond on one of the islands. When she got home and realized she had left it, she called and they went right to her room and found it. They called her back and told her they had it locked up in the safe at the port. I think a diamond ring left in a room could have easily got dropped in someone’s pocket. Then when my mom called she would have thought she lost it else were. After all, she did leave it behind. There are more good people out there than bad!!

Thanks one and all for thier input and insight. I would like to think that there are more honest people in this world than dishonest and I believe those working onboard take great pride in themselves and their work. The suitcae under the bed was a very good suggestion. That should be added to the tips and tricks board. I know we just got back from shopping for the trip and my DW made a list of the suggestions. They were very helpful. Not to sure what the duct tape would be for though.
