Room only vs Package (new tickets)

Since Disney switched to ticket prices based on specific dates, is it better to book room only with separate tickets or a package? Or is there no difference at all? I’m trying to estimate how much it will cost for our April 2020 trip so we can save up but I’m not sure at all how to predict ticket prices anymore.

I prefer booking room only because less is due up front and I can space out our payments over the months leading up to the trip (as opposed to being hit with the lump sum the month before we go) but is there an advantage to a package now? For example, if they suddenly decide to raise ticket prices (like they just did) would we already be locked into the previous rate? Or maybe it all ends up being the same price either way. Any insight would be super helpful!

First, you can't book packages for 2020 yet. Typically these are released in June/July. Second, the deposit for a 1-night room-only reservation may or may not be less than the $200 required to book a package. Disney will allow you to make payments towards your package whenever you'd like, up until 30 days to arrival when it has to be paid in full. If you book a package when they are released your tickets/pricing will remain unless you make significant changes to your package before you depart.

I tend to book separately. As a FL resident I get good deals regardless of price increases in rooms or tickets. With room only, I believe you can cancel up to 5 days before you arrive with no penalty. Please DISers correct me if I'm wrong. I'm lucky where only having to pay the first night is a bit cheaper than the $200 I'd have to pay for a package. On my reservation back in January, I only had to pay $132 and some change for our ressie at All Star Sports. I owe $417 when we check in on the 2nd of June. As the PP mentioned, your deposit could be more than the $200 for a package depending on what resort you book.
