Can a room only reservation be converted to a package once they're released or will I have to cancel and rebook? Thanks!

Short answer is No.

The details: with a Room Only (RO) reservation you make 1 night's deposit, with the balance due at "Check-in". For a package, you make an initial $200 deposit and the balance is due 30 days before your stay for a package.

It can be done by calling CRO in a single call.

The RO will have to be cancelled/refunded and a package booked, requiring a new $200 deposit. Since RO and packages are different reservation systems, money paid toward one cannot be applied to the other.

Ok that's what I thought but saw some comment on the Disney Mom Panel site about converting a reservation I thought...just don't want to miss the kind of room I want in Feb after the SW mania!

Do you need a package? Just a thought. I did room only this time and the only difference I've noticed is that it's a bigger deposit, have to call to make payments and no fun luggage tags.

Correct, for a regular hotel room, you need the package to add on the dining plan.

With the travel agent we had a room only booked, then called back to add dining plan. She said, "No problem, you have no idea how easy it is to add that." Now since I had already paid for the one night room only of $169, I assumed it would now need a further payment to make it $200, but I ended up just paying the full balance off, which was an additional $225-ish for the dining plan. So I can't answer exactly how it would have worked: if I would have just needed to pay $31 or what.

You do not need to buy tickets to add a dining plan to your room only reservation. They will call it a "ticketless package". You can then purchase tickets from a 3rd party or separately from disney.

You don't need a package.....
As room discounts and packages are released, you can evaluate your options. Sticking with room only may turn out to be the best deal on your preferred accommodations...a package may ultimately give you the best deal on what you want.

Room only and packages are sold by separate sub divisions of the company. So, you can't convert a RO to a package. It requires a cancel and rebook. Which requires availability for the new reservation, which they may or may not have. If you cancel the RO first, the availability may not show up right away, or someone else could grab it, so you have to make the package reservation before canceling the RO.

However, even if there is no availability, if you call the reservation number, and tell them what you want to do, a supervisor could override the system (assuming you get someone with the knowledge and willingness), and essentially overbook the hotel, knowing they will be simultaneously canceling the first reservation. However, if the resort is already overbooked for some reason, they won't be able to do that.

Not sure if they can apply the funds directly from one to the other, or it would require a refund and a new payment.

I did this last month. I origionally had an AP room only reservation. I called to have the DxDp added. 1st CM didn't know how to convert it to a ticketless package and wanted to charge me $1000 more. Called back and the 2nd CM immediately knew how to do it. I was on the phone on/off hold for over 30 minutes, but she was able to add the DxDP for the package before cancelling my room only ressie. I was able to keep my origional AP discounted room rate as well.

Yes, you will need to call and have the CM add it as a ticketless package. Not all know how to do this you may have to call back several times, don't let them say they can't ask to speak to a supervisor if necessary...see my reply a coulple of posts earlier.
