room number assignment?

My deposit has been made. I called a day ago to ask when I can pick my room and the phone rep said I couldn't, that it would be assigned to me when the category sold out. Is that right?

Did you book a GTY room? That's when that applies. Since you only put down a deposit it's not a IGT/OGT/VGT restricted rate.

according to my res it is a GTY rate. So that means that the assignment is given when the CAT is sold out? When does that usually happen. I hope my FE group won't hold that against me.

You could get your cabin assignment any time from now to the day you sail. There isn't any real set time at which they make the assignments but many seem to come in around 2 weeks before sailing.

FE groups typically have provisions for people with guarantee cabins. Check with the organizer.

Actually, regular GTY bookings are usually assigned about 30 days in advance. It is the IGT, OGT and VGT bookings that are usually not assigned until right before sailing (approx 2 weeks).

But, as mentioned above it can be assigned at any time.

With GTY bookings it means that the category you want has already sold past a percent threshold determine by DCL. You can book the category but they can't assign a cabin number yet as they need to wait to see if people will cancel, etc. Sort of like overbooking of an airline but you WILL NOT be bumped. Also, with a GTY booking there is a chance that if your category can't be assigned a room number due to the anticipated number of people cancelling does not happen, they could upgrade you to the higher category at no extra cost. They will not put you in a lower category.
