Room Key Cards

I have a question concerning Disney World room key cards. Can they be used on all Disney properties for all purchases – including snacks? If so is there any reason to carry cash while in the parks?

We purchased our park hopper tickets and booked our room from AAA. Do we need to bring our tickets to each park, every day or do we use the room card?

Thanks!

The room key cards can be used for most purchases all over at the resorts and parks. There are some kiosks in the parks that may not take them, so some cash can be handy. Also, if you eat at the swan or dolphin or some restaurants at downtown disney, the cards may not be used. You will need to give a credit card at the resort when you check in so that you can have charging privileges on the room key.
When you get to the hotel and check in, you can have them add your tickets onto your room key, so you will not then need to carry both around.

There are also some stores that don't accept your KTTW cards as a form of payment. I know that Magnetron in Downtown Disney West Side is one of them, however I am not sure how many other stores are like that.

You could pretty much get by without cash, but I think it's always a good idea to have some.

At ice cream carts you can use your room key, but the booth operators don't always have a machine at the cart. They ring it later if they don't ahve one, and write down your info. You could either skip ice cream carts, which is easy enough to do, or you can carry a few dollars.

I also think there are small items you may want where it's faster and more practical to use cash.

I think you pretty much need cash for the pressed penny and pressed quarter machines.

It is not limited to credit cards. You can also back up a room charge with:
  • debit card (with VISA/MC logo)
  • cash
  • travelers checks
  • Disney Dollars

There are multiple locations at the water parks than only pretty much take cash. Some may take credit cards, but not KTTW or Disney Rewards.

Do you have the physical tickets yet, or just a confirmation number for your tickets?

We have taken paper copy tickets before that we purchased ahead of time and received through the mail and tried to get them hooked to our KTTW card and they couldn't do it.

When we went with just a confirmation number, they hooked them to our KTTW card.

I don't know if this is always the way it is or not?

As for the charging, I am sure there are places that don't take it, our family has not encountered one before, there is a limit though on how much you can charge, I think it is somewhere around $1600 or so.

Room charge maximum limits are a function of the "level" of your resort. At Values it's $500, at Moderates it's $1,000 and at Deluxes it's $1,500. You can elect to set a lower limit of you want.

If you reach the limit during your stay, you can simply visit or call your resort's front desk and authorize a new room charge to be set up.

The last water park I was at was River Country, so I don't know about the water parks ... but at the theme parks, the only time you CAN'T use a KTTW card (or a credit/debit card, for that matter) is the roving vendors that walk in front of and behind parades such as Spectromagic. There are also occasions such as the Food & Wine Festival when there are outside vendors in World Showcase, and they are not tied into the WDW system and thus don't take the KTTW card. Businesses in Downtown Disney ... some take the KTTW card, some don't.

On my next trip, I plan to bring this old room key (circa 1978) to attempt to make room purchases...just to get a rise out young CMs.

Good to know, I didn't realize it changed based on where you stay as we have never reached our limit so I guess I never have paid any attention to it. I only remember the last time we went b/c I am the one who checked us in.
