Room Check..

Yes. Apparently in response to the Las Vegas domestic terror incident in 2017, Disney adopted policies designed to enter every room on a daily basis. For DVC stays, housekeeping will now empty the trash daily. Sometimes they replace towels & toiletries. The manner in which it is communicated may vary, but that's their intent. Best approach is to remove the "room occupied" sign whenever you leave the room for a period of time. Housekeeping staff typically looks for the signs to be down and tries to do their job then. If the sign isn't taken down, chances are you'll get a knock on the door later in the day from someone looking to complete their assigned tasks. It's a 2-3 minute job.

It's not a room search. They shouldn't be rummaging through drawers or searching luggage. Seems to be more of a way to avoid guests having days upon days of uninterrupted time in the hotel room with no interaction from staff.

That's been the policy for a number of years now. Sometimes they will just knock on the door and stick their head in, sometimes they will come in the room and sort of glance around, sometimes they will empty the trash. Just depends on what employee is doing it. There is no set schedule as to when they will do it and whether or not you are in your room will make no difference. I've had them knock when I've been in the room and I've had them come in the room when I wasn't. I don't even bother putting the room occupied sign out any more but I do always put the safety bar on the door so they can't just walk in if I'm there. 97% of the time if you are in the room, they are very polite about it, there have been stories of people who have asked them to come back later and have been told no or have told them they can't go in the bathroom because someone is in there and they have been told they have to inspect the bathroom. I've never had them do anything but knock on the door and stick their head in, they have never physically come into my room while I was there but that is just my experience.

Ever been told rooms need a mandatory daily inspection?
Yes. I had housekeeping call me and ask if I needed anything, and then when I said No, that I was fine, they told me that they HAD to come in for the mandatory daily inspection. What I remember is that the housekeeper who called didn't show up, but instead it was a poor kid who was probably on the college program-he was about that age-and he looked so scared. He kept asking if I was sure he couldn't get me anything and when I finally asked for more decaf coffee, he brought me a huge bag of more coffee than I'd ever drink! Some housekeepers like doing the inspections, but some really don't.

We have been lining up our waste containers in the alcove by the door into the room when we head out to the parks. If they have been by during our absence, the containers are empty when we return. If not, we leave the Room Occupied sign off the door, but most days, they have completed the room check while we were out.
