Room Availability Question ?

Just a quick question about availability of rooms - when trying to book my reservations, I was told that a couple nights were not available - BUT I could book them with cash if I wanted too ???

I asked why they are available for cash/rack rate but not available to book with my points. The CM said that "by law" they are required to keep a minimum number of rooms available for non DVC members ??

I just have to ask - What law is that....Mickey's Law ???

I have never heard of a law like that before ???

So alas - we are waitlisted for any resort during our dates.

When new resorts are built the units are declared into points inventory as those points are sold. Until they are declared they are part of the cash inventory. Once the resorts are fully sold, DVC retains a 4% ownership in each. The rooms that represent that 4% are rented as cash rooms. They are a separate inventory from points-based rooms. In addition, when members trade out for other destinations the rooms that represent the points traded out can be rented for cash as well. So the inventories are completely separate. A room might be available for cash and not points, or vice versa.

I don't know if it's actually a "law" but it's part of the contract you signed when you became a member. Rooms are kept in separate inventories - member and not member owned. You can only book member owned rooms with points.

THe "by law" part probably has to do with the rooms that are traded out by DVC members to other non-DVC and non-II locations. Technically they are already rented on points, and are made available for cash to offset the cost of the trade. So probably "by law" the room can not rented to another member for points, as rooms can't be rented twice for points.

Thanks for the responses - I get it now.

Not a big deal - we are trying to book last minute anyway....if we cant get in....well just have to go back in January ...?!??!
