We will be checking into the WLV early in the morning, around 10am. Will any of our room requests be honored or will they simply assign us whatever is available. I am not familiar with the new system of not pre-assigning. Shoud I have a list of rooms I want to see if any of thoses are free. We requested near the elevator and looking over the quiet pool view, non smoking, studio.

Thanks

They will look at your requests and match them as closely as possible starting with the order in which you requested them. ie, if your first request was NS, they will try to fill that first, and so on down the line. This is what I was told when I asked the question at MS last week.

I stayed at VWL 2 weeks ago, we checked in around 4:30 and were given the choice of 2 one bedrooms. Our request was non-smoking, top floor, water view. They had one on the 5th floor but facing the bus stop or 3rd floor facing the pool. We took the 3rd floor and were pleased. So if they do not have anything ready that meets your requests, ask them what they have if you would wait.

I'm still trying to figure out how they assign rooms. My first stay as a DVC member was in Nov. at VWL (studio room). When I made the reservations I only requested non-smoking....it didn't matter what view we had....I probably would not have even minded that dreaded dumpster view I heard so much about! I was just excited about my first stay there as a member!! We checked in at noon but the room wasn't ready until 3:30.

We made a quick 2 night stay again in Dec. at VWL and this is when I really couldn't figure out how they assign the rooms.................Once again, I only requested a non-smoking room when I reserved the studio. This is what happened when I checked in at 1:00 pm................ They told me we were going to be in a studio that had no tub, just a walk-in shower. Well, I knew right away that this was a handicapped accessible room and I really wanted a tub. I was going to take that studio room if it was ready just so that I wouldn't have to wait on a room. So I asked the CM if it was ready and she informed me it was not ready yet. Well, I figured that since I had to wait for the room to become available I asked her if there was any way I could wait on a studio that had a tub. She went in the back for a moment and when she returned she said we had a room with a tub now and the room was ready NOW! Huh,????????????? I just don't get it................!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The handicap room they first assigned us to that I didn't want was not ready, but a room I did want and was willing to wait for was immediately ready...............................Can someone explain that situation to me???????????

Sounds like the resort was pre-assigning rooms on that day. Before anyone even arrived, the room assigner did their magic and tried to match vacant rooms with requests. Theoretically, the greater good was served and every attempt was made to accommodate the wants / needs of individual guests.

You unfortunately ended up with the pre-assigned Handicapped Accessible room.

Now, here's the kicker. When you asked for a different room, the CM took it upon herself to switch you with another guest. And it just so happend that the room you were switched to was already cleaned and ready for you to move in.

The downside to this is that the guest originally assigned to that room might have checked-in at 9am and informed that their room wasn't yet available but "all of your requests have been met." Unfortunately by the time they got up to their "room", they discovered a Handicapped Accessible room which was far from their requested accommodation, and proceeded to (literally or figuratively) curse-out the front desk staff for "lying" in the first place.

That's what happens when CMs start switching guests on the fly.

And please don't think that I'm saying you were wrong for requesting a different room. If the CMs are agreeing to make these changes, they are the ones at fault.

This is one of the reasons that I'm a fan of the Room Ready system in which rooms are assigned when the guest arrives at the front desk. I know that Room Ready doesn't do justice to every guest, but my experiences have certainly been better than a flawed system of manual assignment--particularly when compounded by CMs trying to accommodate whichever guest screams the loudest.
