I have allergies, and need to use a room air cleaner. Does anybody have any suggestions for a portable, affordable room air cleaner? I have a Roomaid, 9in, 4lb. round one that I take on driving trips, it would be a real pain to lug, but would do it if I had to. I don't like ozone. I saw the ionic breeze for Sharper Image, maybe the bathroom one would work? (Bigger one too expensive)

Thanks in advance for your help, I know there must be other allergy sufferers out there who have cruised successfully!:Pinkbounc :bounce:

Hi, and welcome to the DIS! What are you allergic to? If it's hay fever type allergies, they shouldn't be a problem out on the ocean. I'm allergic to chemicals, strong cleaners, perfumes, cigarette smoke, etc. I figure I will just ask them not to spray air freshener in our room, and the access to the veranda and fresh air should take care of the rest. It would be a shame to have to lug an air filter, they weigh a lot! Diana

I have horrible allergies also...one of the reasons I loved the cruise. I had no issues except with the cigarette smoke. Ask them not to spray anything in your room, and air it out your first evening after you leave port.

The Ionic breeze is great...have them and used them for years after I got fed up with filters and electric prices! Bathroom one won't do much for a cabin size, tho...you'd need the smaller size one.

I don't have any advice on the air filters but I just wanted to tell you how my allergies and asthma were on the Disney Wonder..... FABULOUS! I felt better than I ever have here in Maine. I have many many many environmental allergies (basically if it's plant, or animal- I'm allergic to it- perfume and smoke really do a number on me too) but I felt wonderful on the ship. Good luck to you!

Hi, I don't mean to ruin a good thing for those of you who found the ionic breeze form Sharper Image a GOOD thing, but they did a test on that on Dateline or one of those news shows, AND in Good Housekeeping. They said it's worthless. They did tests and said it basically does NOTHING.It didn't reduce any allergens, or remove smoke or ANY of the things it claimed to do. They are VERY expensive, so save you $$$ and lug your Ol' trustworthy one with you..

Well, all I can say is that you should see the filter every week when I clean it! If it's not doing something, I don't know where it all comes from! And people are always asking how I can have two big dogs and never have my house smell like animals. I'm a believer from experience!

Reading this thread made me a little concerned about the rooms I have booked for our January 2003 cruise. I am highly sensitive to cigarette smoke smell and get hangover-type headaches and ill to my stomach from it. Our rooms are the secret portholes on deck 5. There is no way to "air out" our room!! Am I going to be ill? (not to mention I'm already afraid of my seasickness). This will be my first cruise. If anyone can tell me what to expect I'd appreciate it!:( :(
