From Dictionary.com:

Asian is now strongly preferred in place of Oriental for persons native to Asia or descended from an Asian people. The usual objection to Orientalmeaning “eastern”is that it identifies Asian countries and peoples in terms of their location relative to Europe. However, this objection is not generally made of other Eurocentric terms such as Near and Middle Eastern. The real problem with Oriental is more likely its connotations stemming from an earlier era when Europeans viewed the regions east of the Mediterranean as exotic lands full of romance and intrigue, the home of despotic empires and inscrutable customs. At the least these associations can give Oriental a dated feel, and as a noun in contemporary contexts (as in the first Oriental to be elected from the district) it is now widely taken to be offensive. However, Oriental should not be thought of as an ethnic slur to be avoided in all situations. As with Asiatic, its use other than as an ethnonym, in phrases such as Oriental cuisine or Oriental medicine, is not usually considered objectionable.

So now we have to check the calander for the politically correct term for asians/orientals/mongoloid people before refering to them. I just got used to afro-american after colored, black and negro were considered politically incorrect.

Ok, so today, the politically correct, culturally sensitive term is 'Asian', thank you, when that changes and 'Asian' becomes politically incorrect, could you please send me an e-mail?

Personally, I don't mind whitey, even cracker is OK, I am just glad that everyone agrees 'honkey' is politically incorrect.

Not to be a moderator, but I think the debate board is a better place to discuss my cultural insensitivities.

Re: SARS

I have been coughing for three weeks now...had to cancel our trip to Florida because it got so uncomfortable....

Still...I was looking forward to the plane ride, coughing all the way, just to see if anyone thought I had SARS! What a sick sense of humor......

I bet that could get you restrained and isolated nowadays. Think of what the rebellion would be to a hijacker today, would a cougher be much less?

Are you asian?

haha. yeah, i read in the news that the gov't has now authorized detainment "by force" of anyone flying in on international flights that show any symptoms of SARS. i was curious what exactly "by force" meant. heh.

anyway, Rich, do you miss BWV yet? ;)

Nope - not Asian - proudly Swedish!!!

I refuse to be isolated or detained unless there is a nice back rub involved!!

Seriously, I did consider the problem...but it wouldn't have stopped me from going if I had felt better!!
