Has anyone used rolling duffles on an airplane? Did you check them? And were they OK when you pick them up at baggage claim?

The airline we are flying has a 44lb baggage limit. The duffles I have been looking at weigh about half of my suitcase so I am considering purchasing one for each of us.

Anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks

I have 2 rolling duffles (29") that I actually got from disneyauctions, they are soft and they worked fine on our last trip. They are a lot lighter than a traditional suitcase. When we arrived at CBR, we unpacked the duffles and since they are soft, they fold down flat and slid right under the bed so they were out of the way. They worked out great. -Stephanie

They work great. As a matter of fact, we are using them today! Just a word of caution, though, don't pack anything breakable in them. Sometimes when they are loading and unloading, they get other suitcases thrown on top of them.

I took a Jeep brand one on a airplane/cruise and when it arrived in my cabin, the plastic around the wheels had broken and hung up on the wheels, making it almost impossible to pull. As soon as I got home, I returned it.

We only had owned one large traditional rolling suitcase last year, and DH , DD1, and I were going. With the weight limits on the airlines, we felt it best to use the very large rolling duffels we had bought to carry home our souveniers the prior year. We didn't actually roll them through the airport, but carried them on a luggage cart. We tried not to put anything that could get ruined if it got wet or squished in there. Another good thing about rolling duffels is the fact that they are soft sided, and can sometimes be squished to fit better than other luggage in a trunk or behind a back seat. Hard sided suitcases are unforgiving when you try to stuff them in a trunk!
