Rolling backpacks seen in parks

Please go back and read page two. It is a lengthy post and it just hit me hard. Sorry, you think I am spouting jibberish. I have three silbings sick right now and it is about to break my heart.

I just have a hard time when people think their way is the ONLY way. Is not my way.

::yes::

Rolling backpacks and wheeled luggage in the parks is rude. I personally tripped over one in December and the owner did nothing.

I have to agree. Especially when everybody in the family has to have one.

Slightly Goofy, I did read page 2 and still am not sure what was said that was so wrong because it was people saying they thought it was people who needed the bags for medical reasons were fine. I apologize for using the word "jibberish" since what you said is not jibberish but at the time I didn't know where it fit into the thread and I had just posted before you and I couldn't for the life of me see what I said wrong. I TRULY am sorry for your family's health problems. I DO understand since mine has had them too. I wish you the best. I just didn't understand why this thread got so many people angry for others voicing their opinions but I should know better. Treuce?

Rafikifan. no truce needed. I am not much for fighting and usually try to understand when people are sometimes rude or whatever cause you just plain do not know what they might be going through. I am with you on not understanding why people have to get so nasty cause someone does not agree with them. Life is far too short and we are not the arbiters of what is right and wrong anyway. People do a lot of things that I would not do but that is the way of the world. I am very sorry that you thought I was mad at you. I am not mad at anyone not even the person who posted these thoughts. I do not understand their reasoning but they might just be very young and do not understand. I know I have been guilty of similar thoughts. I used to look at large people who had trouble moving around and because I was such a healthy fat person I thought it was cause they did not exercise as much as I did. Then I got asthma and it sure did hit me hard. It is awfully hard for people to understand things that they have not experienced.

The sentences that hit me hard were "it's hard to have sympathy for self-imposed health problems like that" and " Handicapped people, through no fault of their own should be able to bring whatever they need, but every one else should just deal" written by bdcp. I am not mad at them either, just do not know how someone can judge who is righteously handicapped and who is not. After we decide that one we then have to deal with differing levels of hanidcaps. I am mildly/moderately handicapped, according to the day, and I try to not ask for more than I need.

It is hard, sometimes, on the boards and such because words have such power and we do not see the smiles or whatever behind them. I am a former English major and the word jibberish might mean something else to me than to someone else. Please accept a friendly hug and a smile from

slighty goofy..love ya....i will meet cha backpacks and all at disney world i will bring my inhalor..you bring yours....and everyone the next time you look at someone..realize what they are carrying or lugging around for that matter....there might be a reason for it...dissabilities are not always visible...and much love to you all...

why is everyone so testy???

who the heck cares if you bring a rolling back pack or not..

my kids had them in elementary school & loved them

would I bring them to wdw? heck no!!!
but then again, I miss that my kids are so much older and not in strollers.
miss the fact that I could put packages on the handlebars and that my kids were not exhausted.

so "all you rolling back back users" I could care less if you need it or are harboring 3 days worth of food...

your perogrative....doesn't bother me in the least....

don't even feel this is a issue

You have said that I make no valid point but you have yet to answer why you don't store the items you aren't comfortable carrying in a rented locker where you can go back any time to retrieve?

Because I have a choice. I owe you no explanation. But just one brief reason. I find a great photo opportunity, I am not going to hike for 20 minutes to go get my extra lenses at the locker.

For the people who say that it is ok for handicapped, or needy people to carry them.. How can you discern who has a pack full of oxygen, and who has a pack full of food? And since when is it your business anyway? If any one person can bring it in, then everyone can.

cyndibelle.love ya right back. LOL After all we are both Buckeyes, me formerly though. Watch out for the Seravent, it might be recalled next. Evidentally it is on the short list of ineffective and dangerous drugs. BTW, do you use prednisone to get through the parks? Is the only time I do, too dangerous to use often but it is soooo great on vacation. Makes me feel like a new woman. I will be there in November (possible spring trip planned but dh does not know yet) so meet you there!

minijeanie, now that you little ones are not so very little maybe you could rent one of those big double strollers and have them push you guys around. Bet they would love it almost as much as you would. LOL

How lovely for people to disagree without being disagreeable. Mouse Power!!!

Slightly Goofy

Puritan, Make sure you post some of those lovely pictures so that we can see them too please? I carry a small camera with me sometimes but some days that is just too darned heavy. I use pictures that you guys take as a screensaver so that I can daydream about my next vacation.

Puritan, I'm not trying to argue but I too am curious. Why would you rather lug that thing around when you can leave your sweatshirts and stuff in a locker?

I only carry the sweatshirts on the days that it is too cold. I also bring my camera equipment, including my tripod for the spectacular night shots. I bring a couple of waters just to hold the kids over between meals. (not to mention the fact that my kids don't drink soda) I bring a few energy bars to keep me going. I leave about half of the space open for souveniers. The kids always get tired of carrying <insert what you just bought them> 20 minutes after you get it. That's what it is all about anyway, having fun.

Oh, and I only roll it when I get tired from carrying it on my back, and never in a big crowd like after the parade or park close.

Great, now we get to hear the lovely roaring of plastic wheels going down the walkways instead of the Disney music! Rolling backpacks and suitcases are just so loud! I can't stand the noise they make.

Next time I'm at WDW, I'm asking Guests Relations about the policy, and if they tell me wheeled bags aren't allowed, I'm pointing them out to every CM, just like I do the smokers not in the designated locations. If it's the rule that you can't have them, then you shouldn't have them. Nobody's better than anyone else, and we all should follow the rules.

slightly goofy.

  :grouphug:

what a lucious thought. nothing could be better than to be carted around by my children.

hmm... would even pay for someone to push me in a umbrella stroller....
of course adult size please (lol)

hey, maybe this can be the new gimmick in the parks. everyone in strollers!

yippee

no more tired feet

Now I am just asking this out of curiosity. What all do you feel you have to bring in a rolling backpack or suitcase into the parks that is medically necessary? I can see stuff for asthma but the ones I have seen fit in a fanny pack. Diabetes medications or liquid antibiotics should be in a refrigerator in First Aid. Other medications I can think of would all be small enough for a fanny pack. I honestly cannot think of what could be in those cases?

perhaps we do not like fanny packs....and like i said....i have dietary restrictions....i can not eat anything i want...have you heard of menieres disease..probably not...very rare...well i have it....lucky me.....i have to watch everything i put in my mouth...i am one of those who gets to bring most of my food with me to disney....and those sweet hearted disney people let me...

minijeanie, I have long felt that DW could well afford to let us in for free and charge us for using a rolling walkway on our way out. Just a thought.

Run that stroller idea by your kids and see if they do not like the idea. That way they are in total charge, you go where they say you go. Will be a chance to see what they plan on doing with you when it comes time for the nursing home. LOL

cyndibelle, I am sure that the official Disney line is that everyone is required to stay on site, preferably at the deluxe resorts, eat on site, preferably at the upscale sit down restaurants (double points for Victoria & Alberts) and buy week passes, only use three days and then lose them and so on but then there is reality. LOL

I love seeing the little old couples sitting in the shade with their boiled eggs and bananas, families with their bologna sandwiches and such (as long as they are not sitting in seats that paying diners need). Many of them would not be able to go any other way. I have been there and remember it well. People who do such are not likely to buy food in the parks in any case.

I am happy that you are able to bring what you need so that you can enjoy your visit. Just hope that you do not encounter anyone rude enough to butt into your business and ask you what you are doing. You know, sort of like those annoying nerds in school who were always raising their hands in the air, crying, Miss Smith, Miss Smith, Johnny is talking in class! (grin)

Slightly Goofy but totally cool with whatever you wanna do

::yes::

I have my head and eyes up looking at the sights, not on the ground looking for someone's bag. The Magic Kingdom isn't an airport for Pete's sake, I shouldn't have to look out for your rolling bag because it makes your life easier.

So I should probably put all my small children on my back too, since you have your head and eyes up looking at the sights. That way you won't trip over them and hurt yourself. So what if they get hurt as long as you are happy in the park I guess that is all that matters. I'm really not trying to be a jerk, I'm just trying to understand. And to anyone that has children, or doesn't like to hear whiny children, try being on one side of the park and have sweatshirts in a locker in another side of the park, when they get cold. I'm sure that would be posted on these boards somewhere about having to put up with whiny children. Sorry I'll stop ranting now, cuz personnaly I have no opinions about rolling backpacks.

"And if you need oxygen due to emphysema, sorry, but it's hard to have sympathy for self-imposed health problems like that."

This was a quote from page one and the only reason that I read the entire thread so that I could respond. (Sorry I don't know how to cut and paste it the way other have done.)

I just wanted to comment that my grandpa was a deep miner (for coal). He had emphysema. There is more than one way to get it.

I can't believe how negative and mean spirited this thread is. I hope this issue could be put to rest, with a yes, Disney permits or no Disney does not permit rolling backpacks.

FYI - I use a fanny pack and would not want to deal with a backpack, rolling or otherwise.

Peace.

Pam

Maybe Disney could start renting out rickshaws! You know, those things in China where people sit in a cart that looks like a wheelbarrow and a little guy pulls it around? Maybe you could even rent a driver to go with it, then you don't have to watch where you are going at all! That would be awesome! Maybe each cart could have a storage compartment to hold rolling backpacks and other items. I could make a lot of money with this idea...

I just don't see what the big deal is about these?! They obviously have to be smaller than strollers, WAY smaller than the park issued double strollers. I can see the draw, especially for those of us with kids who are too big for strollers but who still need stuff to entertain them, changes of clothes, jackets, ponchos, water bottles, suntan lotion, etc. To whoever the above poster was who said "they" didn't need them and had always gotten by with a stroller and backpack - well, that's the point, if you have a stroller, you have somewhere to put everything, including your backpack if you don't want to haul it on all rides. I can easily fit an entire lunch including drinks, a complete set of swimwear for a family of 5, jackets plus ponchos under my stroller and it's a lightweight $30 one.

I understand the point about they're behind you, not in front of you, but how many times have you been plowed into by a stroller that didn't stop in time or wasn't looking where they were going? At least these won't be running INTO you. And I don't think they're that far behind people that it's as annoying as kids on the leashes who are dawdling 5 feet behind their parent effectively blocking off that whole area. I've never seen one that extended more than about 1-2 feet.

I just don't get the controversy. That said, no, I don't have any intention of bringing one to the parks next week even though all my boys have nice ones for school. They're just too bulky for me to carry when necessary, to maneuver and to fit on rides for me to ever consider one. And I don't think I'd be comfortable leaving them out like a stroller. But I really think they'd just inconvenience me, not others.

As to Disney setting a policy, they have, no rolling backpacks (at least you're theoretically not allowed to "roll" them). As to Disney enforcing a policy, well, that's where the problem seems to lie! I'll let you all know how bad they are next week!
