Rock-n-Roller Coaster preshow digitally altered?!?

The only thing I notice in the video is the now seriously vintage cell phone the manager is holding. It's a riot!

As for the Muppets pot joke, I'm sure Gonzo will tell you it's for medicinal purposes. :hippie:

I always marvel at how the Pure of Heart even know about this sort of thing. I'm a reasonably hip Senior Citizen, spent lots of time in Low Places over the years, and I had to have one of my daughters 'splain this to me. Do they print these things in the church bulletin? Maybe I should return to the flock so as not to miss out on the goodies. I recall the tales of Sodom and Gomorrah in Sunday School, couldn't wait to go away to college to see what that was all about. And while we're at it, what might Gomorrahy be? And where can I get me some?

This. RnR is probably my favorite ride in all WDW. I've never really noticed, and frankly don't care. Hope people aren't whining and complaining about it, but I guess people will always find something to whine about or be offended by. Soon the Muppets pre-show video will change because the evil frog (forget his name) has an accent which someone will complain is stereotyping...

I hope it does change--not because of the alleged stereotyping but because it was (a) a stupid change (b) to the original, better pre-show (c) to promote a bad sequel (d) that came and went long ago.

was the shocker even a thing 17 years ago??? probably more like 18 to 20 when it was actually filmed...

Same here! Then of course, I had to Google what the gesture meant.

How do you google this? I can't figure out how to Google a hand gesture. I have no idea why this would be considered offensive??? I Googled 'offensive hand gestures' and this one didn't come up anywhere.

Just totally confused as to why this is offensive.

it's called "the shocker"

I never noticed the hand gesture before, and I could care less that they digitally removed it. Literally has no effect on my ride experience either way.

I'm more stressed out by the fact that RnR has been running for 17 years now. I must be getting old! :scared:

Good question. I don't know either.
As for why that particular symbol is offensive (when it's used as intended) If you Google Shocker you'll figure out why.
Still don't think it was intentional. But that's probably because I'm always inadvertently doing things that can be interpreted more than one way, depends on what you want to make it out to mean. Usually it's something I say.

So - it took Disney 17 years to notice??!!!

It opened July 29, 1999, 17 years ago. The obscene gesture comments started when it first opened. So what happened? Another day they couldn't take? lol Why remove it now, absurd.

Wow. They removed it now? Not going to lie, I'm pretty sure Steven Tyler knew EXACTLY what he was doing with that gesture and it wasn't just some random shielding of the eyes but they let it go for so long. Why alter it now?
Not sure why the timing is being questioned. The answer is simple: when this was released 17 years ago, the cost to bring back Steven Tyler and have him refilm the shot far outweighed the cost of bad publicity and dealing with guests who complained. Today, using computer generated technology, the cost paradigm is reversed so it is more cost effective to make the change. After seeing Soarin' go from a beautiful film depicting the natural beauty of California to a computer generation of things you may see around the world, nothing Disney does should be a surprise to us (yes I'm bitter about the Soarin' changes).

I was going to ask this exact thing! I feel like a dummy for not knowing!

Yes, I'm pretty sure it was. I remember hearing about it in junior high, which would be around that time.

I was going to ask this exact thing! I feel like a dummy for not knowing!

It has it's own wikipedia page that actually describes it without being too vulgar.

The most shocking thing about the video is Illyanna Douglas's acting as the manager ("make it a super stretch")....Steven Tyler rode the coaster on his birthday a few months back.
