Anyone know anything about Roanoke College??? DS#1 ( a senior in high school) has this on his list.. any suggestions??

My DD also got info on this school and said it looked really nice. She has it in her "maybe" folder.

If they want to go onto do post graduate courses...EXCELLLENT school.:thumbsup2 Congratulations!!!!!:cool1:

Stuff you probably already know: first started as a Luthern boys prep. school, liberal arts school, member of Phi Beta Kappa (an EXTREMELY prestigous honor society), prof. are the best in their field with most having the highest degree in their field. They have a 2 core study principle: class + mentoring.

As a parent-some partying goes on-but Roanoke is NOT considered a "party school". It is for kids who already have an idea of the path that they want to go down...and just need someone to help them get to their destination. Has a VERY involved mentoring program-which means more kids DO graduate, someone will be keeping an eye on your kids grades and trying to make sure they get the classes they need to suceed (won't have to worry that they are taking classes JUST because they don't start until noon.).

Went on a tour of their campus with my dn last fall. (She is a Sr. this yr.) I was VERY impressed. Talked to several of the kids who "go" there-just to make sure we weren't just getting the school "hype". (Can't be TOO careful, nowadays. KWIM?)It is really worth touring with your kids.

Thanks for your response. We are going in November to check it out.. he is hoping for a scholarship..

It is awfull far from home though..

I know.
DN was looking at UCLA:sad2: -I freaked.:sad1: Nothing against the school...its just it's UCLA. I asked her "Honey, you realize that IS in California, right?" Her response was  "Uh, yeah." She isn't even gone...and I NEVER thought I'd say this...but I'm going to miss those  .:sad2:
I think the "selling" pt. for me was the mentoring program. I feel as if... okay I can't be there but someone else will be there to protect her, and watch out for her. Make sense? UK, U of L, WKU, and IU are all so much closer to us...but I know how UK is. NO WAY!! She may have gotten an excellent ed. there (I did)-however, I will not have her trying to fit classes in between parties. I trust her...I just remember how college is.:confused3

I have a friend who has a Freshman son on a baseball scholarship ... so far so good.

I can highly recommend Elon University in NC - super school.

all of the others on his final list are closer to home.. beloit, cornell college, knox and this is soooo far..

but I think he likes that it is near the applalatian (SP) trail.. He is an eagle scout so hiking and nature are important to him..

any one else that has knowledge of Roanoke?

I may be able to help. The children that go there seem to be very happy. They have tremendous access to the faculty which in the end is probably the most important aspect of the education in college. No classes would be taught by grad students-you'll be getting the professor for every class. The kids tha tend to go there seem to be happy, well rounded, solid students.

A student can come out and get into graduate programs, a job, and most likely have life long friends. The campus is nice. Used to be sort of a jumble of buildings but a solid master plan has created a unified campus. The new buildings are great spaces, and they have a good plan for the future. Good support system for the students, both in residence life area and in academic area. If they need assistance, it will be easy to find and happily given.

Sports are popular there. Known for very good D3 Lax and men's Basketball. A few fraternities. You can be happy in one or not.

They will be very generous with financial aid, and if your child is a good student, likely merit aid as well. The school is set right into the downtown of Salem, so even without a car they can get to things on foot in town. Salem is kind of a picture perfect college town. Big enough to have what you need, small downtown feel. Roanoke is adjacent to Salem. The shopping malls and such in in Roanoke. There is really no particular dividing line, no space between the 2. Your child would explore both cities often.

If you have any specific questions, just ask. I may be able to help.:)

Thanks for the info. DD is also interested in Hawaii Pacific University..........talk about far away!!! She has had her heart set on HPU since she was in 8th grade. We have gone on 2 open houses and are hoping to tour the school soon. I would push more for Roanoke!! LOL! Still far but closer than HPU.
