Taking 1-10 through Mississippi is fine, you'll hook up with I-12 in Slidell which road is fine as well (you'll see the wind damage to the trees) and is a shortcut to where your headed. I used to take I-49 in Lafayette and when in Shreveport I believe that is where it hooks up with I45 to bring you to Dallas. If you don't take the I-12 and continue through New Orleans on I-10 you will have a brief (sometimes lengthy, usually during main drive times) wait to cross the twin span bridge on the southside of Slidell; otherwise, once over the bridge all roads are in good shape. Have a fun trip.
