Road conditions

Heading west on I-10, you will get on I-12 just east of Slidell. I-12 will join back up with I-10 just east of Baton Rouge. This has always been the quickest and best way to bypass the city, regardless of any effects of the hurricane.

Absolutely - it would waste a lot of time to stay on I-10. I-12 is a big shortcut.
I recently drove on I-12 to I-10 to Mobile and had no problems. I started in New Orleans used the Causeway to get to I-12.

hi arminnie,
The eastbound twin-span is perfectly fine. It's the westbound span that has the temporary roadway and 45 mph speed limit. We went that way last weekend and luckily crossed the westbound span at night with very little traffic. I hear it's really hellacious at rush hour.

Taking 1-10 through Mississippi is fine, you'll hook up with I-12 in Slidell which road is fine as well (you'll see the wind damage to the trees) and is a shortcut to where your headed. I used to take I-49 in Lafayette and when in Shreveport I believe that is where it hooks up with I45 to bring you to Dallas. If you don't take the I-12 and continue through New Orleans on I-10 you will have a brief (sometimes lengthy, usually during main drive times) wait to cross the twin span bridge on the southside of Slidell; otherwise, once over the bridge all roads are in good shape. Have a fun trip.

good information. Keep us posted on how your driving goes...just out of curiosity...is there a website that posts the best information about road conditions around the NOLA area? Yet another reason to fly if you can :)

There sure is a website to check about road closures in LA, it is lsp.org - Louisiana State Police site and has info. regarding road closures all through the state.

I'm definatly more of a road trip kind of person. I'd much rather spend two days of driving than seeing clouds for four hours.
Plus it's a bit cheaper than buying two plane tickets and having to rely on family for transportation, especialy during the middle of the wedding. On top of that I would never trust having my dog in the cargo of a plane.
To top things off, they moved the wedding up August.

with gas prices these days, it's still pretty expensive to drive. But I agree that it's nice to see the scenery. Since I haven't been around the South much I would love to drive down and see everything and to also be able to get to multiple places in Louisiana.
