If I remember correctly, River Country used the lake water. That was in the days before they connected the amoeba from warm waters to the deadly meningitis. We don't swim in the lakes in really warm weather anymore because of that.
If this was a reason to close it it would be way down of the list and yes they used lake water.
The biggest reasons are that they had two new much larger much safer water parks that were not tucked away in a far corner of the property that had direct bus service.
When it was built it was just a short boat ride from everything.
I was thinking more of a reason it wouldn't be done the same way again...if they ever brought it back, it would be pool water like the other 2 water parks...and I'm sure there would be no rocks to dive from!

And then 9/11 happened. RC closed in the wake of it during the huge tourism downturn (whole buildings of resorts were completely disused for a time), and it didn't make sense to continue the upkeep and staffing of RC in light of that. They called it a temporary closure at the time....and just never opened it again.
I never got to go to RC and it does make me sad. We went to Typhoon Lagoon instead - it was new when we went as kids - and I remember talking about how we'd rather go there than "old" River Country. Now I wish we had picked "old" RC!

This is partially the reason, some other reasons - wasn't large enough and filled to capacity pretty quickly - also the location wasn't convenient to anyone except FW guests. Using lake water was an issue also.
Typhoon Lagoon was built and could handle lots more guests and the location was much better, then, of course Blizzard Beach.
I, still, very much miss the 'laid backness' of River Country though. Know that's not a 'correct' phrase, but you get the point!!
