River Country Open?

before switching to POR (couldn't get AP rate at cabins).

He said that he didn't think they'd ever re-open it, and that it was all still there, but that it looked like a "playground graveyard," with grasses growing up through everything.

I agree, the pool at FW was so dull, I would have thought River Country would be a natural for FW. He said he thought that BB and TL killed it.

I'd prefer the pace of River Country, from everything I've read about it.

I miss RC too!!!!! Growing up we stayed at FW every year and my brother and I would go to RC and stay all day!!!

I understand why they may have had to close the fresh water portion of River Country, but it would be great if they could refashion the area and make use of that great pool w/ the slides that end about 5 feet above the water... what a thrill! They could take out the slides and other items w/in the swimming hole and make a nice beach/picnic area there and incorporate it into Bay Lake and rent watercraft. It could all be a part of Fort Wilderness! They could even move the Mickey's Backyard BBQ there!

Oh well... we can dream, can't we????

River Country was closed due to parasites in the water. That is also why there is no swimming at the beaches at Fort Wilderness or at any of the lake side resorts. It is unsafe to be in the water.
Then why do they allow water skiing? And I heard they allow swimmers for triathelons? I believe the parasite was just a rumor. Any link to Disney news release?

:( I too miss RC. How I wish it would reopen!

River Country actually closed Labor Day 2001 for the seasonal close but never reopened. I used to go at least once a week when it was open. Here is a photo I took about a month ago.

Actually I was there last week of June and First week of July in 2001 at fort wilderness, and it was closed.

Half true...

See River County is not directly fed with water from the lake! River Country sits about 2 feet higher then the ACTUAL lake! The water is taken from the lake, put through machines, and goes down through the waterslides/raft ride. I'm not saying the water is perfectly clean, but the water does go through some sort of treatment. Well it DID when the park was open, LOL.

If you ever walked on the wooden bridge on the end of the water park, you would have seen the dropoff from the lagoon the waterpark was in....into the lake.

I think they do not allow lake swimming due to liability. You can not see the bottom, and they would have to have lifeguards. As for the parasites, that rumor has kept me from ever wanting to take a dip in the lake.

This, aside from all the rumors of unsafe water and the like.

Would you mean rumors of snakes and gators? I never heard any rumors, but I can say, I never wanted to go to River Counyry. My 1st trip to WDW, I was walking from the bar next to Pioneer Hall, down to the beach. As I was walking the BIGGEST, BLACKEST snake I ever saw slithered in front of me. I almost stepped on it. It was heading in the direction of River Country. NO THANK YOU. Never had a desire to go to RIver Country after that. Not even a curious desire to check it out.

LOL !! That sounds just like my DW! It really is a shame RC is gone. I was just looking for it on the WDW site and couldn't find it. Now I know why.

We've never been to Typhoon Lagoon, so I guess now we have an excuse to go, but RC was just so cool. I hope they figure out a way/reason to bring it back, parasites or not.

Hey.....maybe the snakes eat the parasites!!
