Riv Direct or Poly Resale?

Oh, and the discounts! You can get a lot of the dining and merch and such with the free Disney Visa, or with Tables and Wonderland, if it ever returns again. You'd have to buy a lot of merch to make up $7K.

Poly studio may not be easy to get after 2042 though. 2042 is going to change all of the common wisdom that we have now. All of those Poly owners that own resale are going to book at Poly and probably just stay at Poly, or at least be more likely to stay at Poly than they are now. I think there is a lot of trading out of Poly right now, why else would you own a 300+ point contract there? Unless you were visiting multiple times a year or banking and borrowing to stay in the bungalows, it would be hard to use all of those points at Poly alone.

Once 2042 hits and the trade out options for resale owners diminish significantly, I think all of the “desirable” L14 will be much harder to trade into, regardless of if your points are direct or resale. Owner are going to be staying there.

We bought resale at Poly because we love it, and we would be happy to stay there 100% of the time. The lack of room sizes is not a deal breaker for us. I think if you are planning to buy resale and hold it past 2042, you should really, really, really buy where you will be happy staying

We do have Disney Visa but the list of restaurants where we get 10% of is so few. I guess I assumed Tables in Wonderland was for blue card DVC members only, but maybe that is not the case?

TIW card is available for Florida residents and for DVC members. DVC members get a slight discount on purchase of the TIW card.

Poly has the charming boat to MK, which I LOVE and also a walking path to MK now
I loved the boat, especially at night leaving MK. Poly is great for trans all around. There’s also the TTC right there with so many direct buses to other resorts. That’s unique for people interested in Dining around.

And AP.
We were able to get TIW with a regular AP.

I’ve bought both in a 4 month span - as others have said, Addonitis is REAL! Riviera direct for extended family trips in a 2BR every other year and just had an offer accepted today on a small Poly resale contract. Not thrilled with the ppp, but decided to pay the premium on a loaded contract with 2020 points. Poly is specifically for DH and myself for fall trips in alternating years - easy monorail access to Epcot for Food and Wine and easy boat/monorail access for MK for MNSSHP.

As a family of five, we have stayed at Poly and the fold out bed was the preferred bed since that person didn't have a partner kicking them. It was a little tight, but not too bad, except for getting ready and sharing the bathroom in the morning. And Poly has some of the biggest studios on property. We found both BLT and VWLCC studios to be very small.

Looking forward to our first DVC stay at Riviera in December. Hopefully, the kids (now young adults) all get along!

RIV it up!! I love both. Long term, can't see myself in the Poly studios year after year. I can absolutely see myself at RIV in a 1 or 2 bdrm each and every year.

Unless I have missed something recently ,at present time TIW card are not being sold.

Excellent point, although that cuts against Poly in the sense that Poly studios are pretty easy to get at 7 months, where Riviera (and other resorts) are much harder to get the studios at 7 months.

Sorry might have wrote it weird.

What I meant is:

POLY easy
RIV sort of easy but never will be as easy as Poly for studios

Also wasn't really looking at the 7 months as never really looked at POLY.

We just added on at Riviera and we were told we wouldn't get 2020 points, how are you able to do so?

I believe it depends on your use year, if you've chosen a use year that has already passed at the time of purchase ( for example, you’ve chosen a February use year ) you will not receive the 2020 points.

Yep, this is the dilemma we're facing now as we are pretty well convinced we want Riv now. Talked to our guide and they are offering Dec. use year right now with 2020 points. Sounds sweet to get the extra points, except our favorite time to go is Oct-Nov, so that would make it super hard to bank or reschedule if we need to most years. He said we could maybe get an exception and is looking into inventory for other UY options. Fingers crossed we will get the best of both worlds, but I suspect we are going to get offered a choice of either December with 2020 points or Feb-April UY without 2020 points. Eep, so many decisions.

I bought in the fall and was in a very similar situation, to be honest the use years still confuse me ☺️ would they offer you the extra points if you ask for either a September or Oct use year?

If I understand it right, I would get 2021 points only if the UY is past--i.e., February, March or April. I think I would get 2020 points if I get June, August, September, October or December, because for any of those, I'd be buying within the 2020 use year. However, I think (again my be wrong) that the 2020 points would be basically unusable for us if I have a June or August UY because we're too late to the bank them, and we can't visit in the next few months. I guess they could be rented, but that seems a bit complicated for a DVC newbie like me.

So Sept/October would be ideal, but I doubt we'll luck out that much. Anyhow, I guess I will have to wait and see what our guide proposes.

good luck! Hope you're able to get your preferred use year and last years banked points :)

Typically, exceptions are made when buying direct to allow late banking so you should be fine with June or August. I don't know if this policy has changed due to the current circumstances with the pandemic.

I'm curious why they can't do any use year. They might be pushing a certain one, but I would think they would do whatever you want to make the sale.

They will definitely bank them as a courtesy. I bought March 25 with an April UY so I got 2020 points by 5 days and they banked them no problem for me. I just did it over online chat since it was faster than calling MS. Choose which UY you want and be firm and they will give it to you. They match all other UYs for previous DVC owners so they will “make an exception” for you as a new owner. So if you think you will travel in the summer pick June, if you will only travel in the fall and winter choose Aug or Sept.

To add, it mentions it in the Home Resort rules and regulations that this is usually done so one can always include that when making sure they will be allowed to bank!

I agree that they push certain UYs but will not turn down a sale because of that. The only time it is ever a potential issue is for sold out resorts. But if buying one in active sales, as you say, be firm it’s what you want!
